World's Best Chocolate Layer Cake (Family Circle)

Ingredients
Cake:1/2 cup butter4 oz unsweetened chocolate, broken up2 1/2 cups flour2 1/4 cups sugar1 c cocoa powder2 tsp baking soda1/2 tsp baking powder1 1/2 tsp salt1 1/2 cups sour cream3 eggs1 cup water2 tsp vanillaFrosting:4 oz unsweetened chocolate, broken up1/2 cup shortening1/2 cup butter, softened1/4 cup sour cream1/3 cup milk2 tsp vanilla1/4 tsp salt1 lb. powdered sugar1/2 cup cocoa powder
Directions
Makes 12 servings.

Melt butter and chocolate in microwave on HIGH for 1-1 1/2 minutes, stirring halfway.
Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and powder, and salt.
Add sour cream, eggs, water, chocolate mixture, and vanilla to dry ingredients in mixing bowl. Beat 30 seconds on low until moistened. Beat 2 minutes on medium.
Pour into 3 greased and floured round cake pans.
Bake for 40 minutes at 350 degrees.
Cool completely.
Melt chocolate in microwave on HIGH for 1 minute. Stir until smooth.
Beat shortening, butter, sour cream, milk, vanilla, salt, 1 cup of powdered sugar, and cocoa powder until creamy. Gradually beat in remaining sugar and melted chocolate until thick and smooth.
Spread about 2/3 cup frosting on one cake layer. Top with another layer and another 2/3 cup frosting. Top with remaining cake layer and rest of frosting.
