Ingredients
Directions
1/2 pound ground pork1/2 pound ground beef4 cups water1 1/4 cups pinhead oatmeal (we used steel cut)1 small (or 1/2 large) onion, sliced *2 bay leaves, optional *1 teaspoons saltPinch of pepper
In a large pot with a lid, boil the water, add salt, pepper and oatmeal.
Cover and let cook for 30 minutes, stirring often.
Add the meat, onion and bay leaves and mix well. There should be no chunks left- the meat should be evenly distributed among the oats.
Cook for another hour, stirring *often*.
Remove bay leaf and our into bread pans (size doesn't matter).
Refrigerate overnight.
To serve: Slice the goetta and fry it until crispy or just until heated through. Goetta may be served with pancakes and eggs, on sandwiches or in place of meat at dinner.
This makes 32 servings. I use a 8x8 inch pan and slice it into 1/2 x 4 inch slices.
Tastes best when crispy with plenty of salt and pepper!

My parents are from Cincinnati and I grew up on Goetta. I stopped eating it because I couldn't find weight watcher points for it. On the off chance I searched for it here and someone already had it posted! I make in a 8x4 bread pan. Brings back great childhood memories, THANKS! - 1/24/16
