George's Favorite Candy Cane Cookies

Ingredients
1/2 C Butter1/2 C shortening1 C powdered sugar1 egg1 1/2 tsp almond extract1 tsp vanilla2 1/2 C flour1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp red food coloring1/2 C crushed peppermint1/2 C sugar
Directions
Preheat oven to 375. Ungreased cookie sheets. Crush peppermint and mix with sugar, set aside.
Cream Butter and shortening. Add powdered sugar, egg, extracts. Stir in dry ingredients. Divide in half. Add 1/2 tsp red food coloring to half of dough. Roll 1 strip of red dough and 1 strip of white dough to about 4 inches. Braid together and form candy cane shape. Bake 8 to 10 min until slightly brown. Sprinkle with crushed peppermint and sugar. These break easily so be careful.
