Grandma V's Cookies

2 1/4 C. flour1 tsp ginger1/4 tsp salt2 tsp ground cardamom1 tsp cinnamon2 tsp baking soda2 Tbsp hot water1/2 C. soft shortening or butter1/2 C. sugar1/2 C. sorghum1 egg1/2 C. seedless raisins1/2 C. white raisins1 C. chopped datesAdding these next ingredients will change nutritional numbers.1 C. chopped nutsFrosting: 3 Tbsp. warm milk, 2 Tbsp. butter, 2 C. sifted powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, colored sugar or sprinkles
Sift together flour, ginger, salt ground cardamom and cinnamon in med. bowl.
In a small bowl dissolve baking soda in hot water.
In large bowl mix well together shortening or butter, sugar sorghum, and egg.
Mix baking soda and water into large bowl and then stir in dry ingredients and mix well.
Add raisins and dates (and nuts if desired).
Drop by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 375 - 400 degrees (depending on your oven) for approximately 10 minutes.
When cool, if desired, frost and decorate with sugar and sprinkles.
