Irish Brown bread

Ingredients
12 ounces (340 grams) whole wheat flour4 ounces (113 g) white flour1/2 ounce of butter or margerine1level tsp of baking soda1 heaping teaspoon of cream of tartar (1.5 tsp)1 teaspoon of sugar, (can be heaped)1 tsp of salt1 egg1/2 pint of milk (8oz.)
Directions
Mix dry ingredients together with the bit of butter. Add milk and beaten egg to make a stiff dough. Knead lightly. Form into a ball, slightly flatten. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Make a cross with a floured knife.
Bake for 20 minutes at 450 oven. Then turn down oven to 425 for 25 minutes. Place a damp towel over bread while it cools.
