2 1/2 c. mung dal or yellow split peas2 1/2 c. water1 1/2 tsp salt1 tbsp minced gingerroot1 small jalapeno, diced1/2 c. diced tomatoes1 tbsp. lemon juice1/2 tsp tumeric2 tsp oil1 tsp cumin seeds1 small dried red chilepinch of asefoetida2 garlic cloves, minced1/4 - 1/2 c. chopped cilantro
1. Rinse mung dal and let soak for 30 minutes. 2. Heat split peas with water and salt until boiling. Reduce heat, cover and let simmer 15 - 20 minutes, until tender and thickened. Add more water, if necessary, to prevent drying out. Add the ginger, jalapeno, tomatoes and tumeric. Cover and let cook until done. 3. Heat oil in small pan. Add red chile and then the cumin seeds. Then the garlic and asetofoetida. Pour into the dal. Stir in the colander.
