Orange Date Squares

2 1/2 cups oats3/4 cup flour1/4 cup honey1/4 cup butter1/2 cup applesauce1 tbsp cinnamon1 1/2 tsp nutmeg1 cup pitted dates1/4 cup raisins2 tbsp grated orange peel1 tbsp cocoa1 tbsp lemon juice1 cup water
Makes 20 squares in an 8x8 inch pan
In small sauce pan combine: dates, raisins, orange peel, cocoa, lemon juice, water. Bring to a boil and cook on medium low heat for 10 minutes until soft and creamy (add more water gradually if needed)
In bowl combine: oats, spices, flour, honey, applesauce and butter. Divide mixture in half. Pour half into a greased 8x8 pan and press firmly. Then add the date mixture to the oat mixture to cover the entire layer. Top with remaining oat mixture and press firmly.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes
