Pears and Barley Oatmeal

Ingredients
2 asian pears1 cup quick cooking barley2 tsp cinnamon1 cup water1cup nonfat milk
Directions
bring water and barley to a boil. Chop pears into bite sized pieces. Put in pears when water and barley is a a brisk boil. Cover the pot and turn heat down to a simmer for 10 minutes. Once barley is tender, add cinnamon.

Serve hot.

    Good soul food, and very kind to my insulin levels. I use Soy milk and maple-flavored agave syrup on mine. :-) Way better than oatmeal. - 1/14/13

    The pears add a nice sweetness to the barley. I thought that was a bit too much cinnamon though. Next time I will halve the amount. Used regular barley (not quick cooking), so mine took about half an hour total + 1/2 c more of water. Also, the calorie count is way off. Mine had only 182 calories! - 3/6/10

    It didn't say what to do with the milk, I'm assuming you added it with the water. I tried this with Bartlett pears and regular barley and a touch of vanilla and it was simply wonderful. My husband said it's much better then regular oatmeal, and I have to agree. What a nice breakfast! - 3/28/07
