super fast fool proof brown rice

  • Number of Servings: 6
Ingredients
2 C brown rice4 C water
Directions
Put water and brown rice into a microwave safe dish, leaving at least 2 inches between the top of the water and the rim of the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap. Microwave on high for 7 minutes, then on 50 % power for 20 minutes. Let sit without moving for 5 minutes. Then open the plastic wrap (CAREFUL! hot steam) and stir, allowing to sit another 5 minutes.

Absolutely fool proof and faster than most methods.

You can do this with white rice also, just reduce the 50% power cooking time to 15 minutes.

It worked and tasted fine. Mine boiled out underneath the plasic wrap and made a mess in the microwave. But, I'd make it again. - 1/23/10

I made this tonight for dinner, since there are only 2 of us I halved the amounts for both rice and water. Having read the comments I put a double layer of paper towels under the bowl and thus avoided a mess. - 5/12/10

I hate boiling brown rice, so this worked out perfect! I added some veggies and it was great. Thanks for posting! - 5/2/10

Great recipe! It was extremely simple!! Instead of using a plastic container I used a glass oven bowl with its glass lid and chicken broth instead of just water fir more taste!! I love how the rice came out!! - 4/7/10

I love brown rice! I like to make mine using vegetable broth instead of water. The broth really adds nice flavor and no extra calories! :) - 1/27/10

I love making super fast easy recipes. Thanks. I used a casserole dish w/it's glass cover. I've ruined a microwave safe container last time following the brown rice package instructions, so I really appreciate this tip! - 11/25/09

I adapted this to 1 C brown rice + 2 C water, cut the 50% cooking time by 5 minutes, Viola! Perfect for family of two and leftovers can be added to next days lunch wrap or salad. - 4/2/11

This is so much nicer than oven cooking, no worrying about burning or wasting gas. I didn't use plastic wrap on top though as I have read that the plastic wrap (even micro safe) leaves plastic particles in your food. - 1/27/11

Wow, that works GREAT!!! Took a bit longer for me, think I'll try 70% power instead of 50% next time but other than that.....YAY!!! Thanks for sharing! - 2/19/10

With the standing time and all, this actually works out to about the same amount of time as the 35 minutes that it takes to fully cook brown rice on the stove, yet this seems to be more work. - 5/15/13

Great! Loved it! I cut amounts down for single serving and modified time at 50% for doneness I like. - 2/3/13

I used my Success 10 minute Brown rice. 2 bags was 2 cups. I added diced veggies that added to 1 C and then Pace Picante Med. which was about 3 C plus another 1 C of water. I did the time it said in the recipe. Very moist and tasty! I added some canned, drained and rinsed black beans at the end - 5/8/12

What kind of rice do you use? Regular long grain, instant, or 5 minute rice? Gunner - 4/21/12

worked like a charm! i did one cup of b.rice to two cups of water and only limited the 2nd heating at 15min on 50% - 12/1/10

Never thought about making brown rice in the microwave (just a old school 40 min on the stovetop kinda girl) but will try this. My son ruins rice every time he cooks it so maybe this will be his saving grace for cooked rice. - 4/9/10

Worked great but are you sure about the serving portion? I had a cup and so did my husband and there was quite a bit left, more than four servings. I used half chicken stock for the water and the flavor was great! - 2/1/10

I just tried this recipe and find it exactly as delores77 said. It's foolproof. I was worried because my microwave does not operate on 50% power but it came out great anyway. Thank you. - 11/20/09

    Thanks for sharing the recipe.

It didn't work so well for me. I made 1 cup rice 2 cups water. Perhaps because my microwave's high setting is only 700 watts? - 11/20/08
