Carne Apache

1.5 lbs raw hamburger1.5 onions chopped3 tomatoes chopped1 bunch of cilantro chopped4 jalapeno peppers chopped finely 4-6 Limes cut and half save juice (throw out the rest)1 cup Reduced calorie Ketchup3 avocados
Makes about 20 tostadas
Mix the hamburger and the juice of the 4-6 limes in a plastic container with lid then add, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, cilantro and mix all the ingredients well. You may have to add more veggies -- you want it to look balanced in colors. Add salt to taste.
You can add more peppers if you prefer or for a really spicy dish try Chili Manzano. (For any chili peppers slice open and de-vein and de-seed first)
Once you have the mixture looking equally balanced in colors add the ketchup to help give it some nice red color usually around a 1/2 - 1 cup.
Cover the container and let "cook" for about 4 hours mixing occasionally. Just before serving cut up the avocados and mix in the Carne Apache.
After about 4 hours the hamburger will be cooked (brown) by the lime juice and it will also Look Cooked. Serve on tostada shells.
The Acid from the lime juice is what cooks the meat and the bacteria, so you wont get sick from the raw hamburger

Sounds very intriguing! Can't wait to try it. Can hamburger which was previously frozen be used, or only freshly ground? And is there a specific cut of beef, such as ground sirloin or chuck that works best? And what level of fat in the meat is recommended, 80, 90 or 90% lean? Thank so much! - 8/6/08

I just use ground beef, low in fat of course, is better, but it doesn't matter. Yes, you can use previously frozen, it won't make any difference in the recipe. Just make sure to let it "cook" the 4 hours or so. I hope you like it! Let me know what you think, I'm really curious.

sounds good, I know alot of people who would and have eaten this, but I just cant make my self try anything new like this. - 7/29/08

I understand how you feel. Had I been told what I was eating to begin with, I'm not so sure that I would have ever eaten another bite. But they made sure that I had eaten 3 tostadas before I was told. I'm glad they did it that way, I really like it, it's one of my favorites.
