Waldorf (Red) Cake

3 tblsp cocoa4 - 1/2 oz. bottles red food coloring1/2 cup shortening1.5 cups sugar2 eggs1 cup buttermilk2.5 cups flour1/4 tsp. salt1 tsp. vanilla1 tsp. baking soca1 tsp. vinegarWALDORF FROSTING4 tblsp flour1 cup milk1/2 cup butter1/2 cup shortening (can use butter and shortening separately but must equal 1 cup)1 cup sugar2 tsp. vanilla3 tblsp powedered sugar
Make a paste with coloring and cocoa.
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and paste. Mix.
Add milk and flour alternately.
Add salt and vanilla.
Mix vinegar and soda. Add to above mixture.
Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
FROSTING
Make paste of flour and milk.
Cook until thick (stir constantly). Let cool (at least 1 hour).
Cream butter and shortening. Beat 4 minutes.
Add 1 cup sugar. Beat 4 minutes.
Add milk paste, vanilla and powdered sugar.
Spread on cake.
