Ingredients
Directions
Spinach- as much as you want!Original Almond milk- as much as needed to mix everything...can substitute regular, soy or rice milkPreviously fresh strawberries and grapes that I cut and frozeFresh bananaFlax oil- a little less than 1 TBSP for single serving1 TBSP Cocoa powderIce- if you want a cold smoothie and your fruit isn't frozen
I just throw everything into my Hamilton Beach single serving blender...whatever fruit I have on hand. I actually do it in steps and blend one item before adding the next so things don't get stuck. You don't need to add sugar if you have good fruit. Otherwise I would add agave nectar, which is low on the glycemic scale.
The spinach mixes in with everything else and you can't taste it at all! Plus, blending it up allows your body to absorb it better than eating it in a salad and relying on your teeth to grind it.
I stock up on strawberries, cut them and then freeze them so I can just pull them out whenever I want. If you're making a bigger serving, you can double what I have or just wing it, adding things to taste...that's what I do!
Cocoa powder is optional...I tasted the smoothie before I added the cocoa and it tasted pretty good.

Do you use fresh spinach? - 7/12/09

Yes, I just stuff it in there, blend and stuff more. Everything is basically a guesstimate of how much to use. I'm not sure how frozen spinach would work, since it always seems kind of watery to me. You do get some tiny tiny bits of spinach and grape skin that can't be blended, but it's a tradeoff

I tried this as a new alternative to yogurt and fruit smoothies. I actually enjoy it. My banana wasn't quite ripe, and you could tell in the end, but otherwise I like the flavor and the fact that it isn't overly sweet but still chocolaty. I will try this again, maybe with some different fruits. - 5/3/11
