Gingerbread Cake

1/4 cup sugar1/2 cup shortening2 eggs1 cup molasses2 cups flour1/2 tsp salt1/4 tsp ground cloves1/4 tsp nutmeg2 tsp ground ginger2 tsp baking soda1 cup boiling water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F Grease the pan.
In a large bowl, beat sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time very well after each addition. Then beat in the molasses.
Sift together the flour, salt, spices and stir into batter.
Now, stir the baking soda into the boiling water then stir into the batter. The mixture will be thin. Pour all ingredients into a well greased 10 x 14 in pan or 11 x 16 in pan.
Bake 30-35 minutes or until done - test with a toothpick for doneness. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or cool whip not included in the nutritional info. Or you can use a penuche frosting since the cake isn't super sweet.
