This is a great steel cut oat recipe. I have added dried fruit instead of fresh apple and I have combined milk and water (to add up to 4 cups) to cook with the oats all with success. We do this on Sunday nights for the coming week. I still may top my bowl with some honey and walnuts in the am. - 1/16/10

Hi blessedsunshine, I'm about to try your oatmeal recipe but have to tweak it a bit. When I looked at your ingredients calculations I've noticed that instead of 1/4C of brown sugar you accidentally used 1/4C of brown rice... maybe you wanna change that :o) really looking forward to breakfast! - 5/26/13

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I love my oats for breakfast, but since I am not a morning person, by the time I wake up enough to fix them, it is lunch time! - 1/29/11

To get the calories near what's reported I had to use a small apple, and unpacked brown sugar. I think I could drop the butter and not miss it. - 10/25/10

The butter is so that it doesn't boil over.

This is a great recipe. I used large flake oats instead, just because I didn't have any steel cut. I think it boiled over, a lot of the apple pieces were in the water out of the bowl and the water was cloudy. So perhaps 8 1/2 hrs was too long. But delicious and filling, now breakfast is ready. - 3/8/10
