Christmas Morning French Toast

Ingredients
1 cup brown sugar1/2 cup butter, melted3 teaspoons cinnamon (divided)1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)3 Granny Smith or other tart apples peeled and thinly sliced1/2 cup dried craisins (or raisins)1 loaf Italian or French bread, cut into 12 slices6 large eggs 1 1/2 cups milk1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Directions
1. Combine brown sugar, butter, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg in a 9x13 pan. Add apples and cranberries; toss to coat well. spread apple mixture evenly over bottom of baking dish. Arrange slices of bread on top.
2. Mix eggs, milk, vanilla, and remaining 2 teaspoons cinnamon until well blended. Pour mixture over bread, soaking bread completely. Cover and refrigerate 4 to 24 hours.
3. Bake, covered with aluminum foil, in a preheated 375 degree oven for 40 minutes. Uncover and bake 5 minutes. Remove from oven; let stand 5 minutes. Serve warm.

Makes 12 serving of one slice each.

    very good, I left off apples, rasins, nutmeg, used light bread, cut the eggs in half and used 1% milk - 12/23/09
