Ingredients
4 cups red kidney beans1 cup raw onions, chopped1 can crushed tomatoes1 tbsp salt1 tbsp pepper, red or cayenne2 cups water1 tbsp canola oil
Directions
Saute onions in oil until golden brown.
Add crushed tomatoes, cook for a few minutes.
Add kidney beans, water, salt, and pepper. Heat through. Serve alone or with basmati rice.

TIPS:
-Use canned kidney beans to make this quickly, be sure to rinse the beans before adding them.
-You can add as much or as little water to the pot depending on what consistency you like.
-You can also add garlic and or ginger to change up the flavors.
-If you REALLY want to change the flavor, buy MDH channa masala (in my opinion the best channa masala brand) or chat masala and add around 1/4 teaspoon to the dish.

This was so easy to make, and delicious! However, the sodium content is off the map. Perhaps 1 tbsp of salt was a mistake? I used cumin, and just a dash of salt, and it was fine. I also used a fresh tomato in the food processor (lower sodium than canned), and rinsed beans as suggested. Thanks! - 4/10/07

For additional protein, I soak soya chunks in warm water and add them to this recipe. They are delicious!! Potato lovers can add diced potato alongwith and let it cook until soft. I have tried this recipe with all kinds of variations and my husband just loves it. Goes good with any Indian bread too! - 9/19/08

I'm cooking this right now. Instead of water I used a homeade salt free chicken broth and also used no-salt added crushed tomatoes. Added garlic and some fresh red cayenne pods from my garden. Can't wait till dinner time! - 8/12/08

To cut the sodium use dry beans instead of caned and dont use the whole tablespoon of salt. Hope this helps. - 11/3/09

This turned out great! I just used a little bit of salt, and not quite so much cayenne, and we all loved it, over rice, or by itself. My husband just sucked it up, like a happy vacuum cleaner. Next time I will make double the recipe, so we can have leftovers... - 5/23/09

Oh, man! This recipe is so good!! I omitted the salt and added a bit of garlic and red pepper flakes. Next time, I think I'll throw some shrimp in the pot, too. This one's a keeper! Thanks, Lotus737! - 5/1/09
