Unstuffed Cabbage

1 1/2 lbs. ground beef1/2 cup diced onion1 tsp. iodized salt, divided1/2 tsp. black pepper, divided1 4-1/2-inch circumference cabbage, trimmed and coarsely chopped1 14.5 oz. can of diced tomatoes, undrained3 strips of bacon
Brown the ground beef. Add the onion and cook until translucent. Season with salt and pepper.
Put half of the cabbage in the bottom of a greased 9 x 13" baking dish. Season with salt and pepper. Top with the meat and remaining cabbage; season again.
Pour the tomatoes evenly over the cabbage. Lay the strips of bacon over the top. Cover with aluminum foil.
Bake for 3 hours at 325 degrees. Discard the bacon before serving.
