This is the umpteeth time I have used this recipe, and while the tomatoes and water are not listed in the ingredients, I've always just added a couple 14 oz cans of diced tomatoes and a cup of water. Works out great. My husband is from Kerala, and he agrees this one is a keeper.

I'd love to try this. Not sure what garam masala is, or where to find it. Other than that, I'm all set to make it though... :/ - 8/30/08

    Hello,
Sorry to reply so late.. Garam Masala is a blend of spices you can get from Indian Shops or from Sainsbury or Asda.
    You need:
Coriander seeds, cummin seeds, few cloves, cardamon, cinammun stick
The bulk is Coriander seeds, and quarter of that is cummin seeds, rest is only small qty. Grind

I substituted tofu for chicken, added some water, half a packet of splenda, and 2 Tbsp sour cream, a little bit of salt and some red pepper flakes to make it more like the way I get it at the restaurant. It was amazing! Thank you so much!! - 2/21/08

This was delicious! I didn't have any Garam Masala, so I used curry seasoning which I think still made the dish taste scrumptious! You definitely didn't need the 4 Tbsp of oil, but I did have to guess on the water... Will definitely make again! - 6/1/09

Regarding missing items = I just added a 27 oz can of diced tomatos and no water. Very good! - 7/20/08

This was very very good! We both enjoyed the different spices (and therefore minimal need of salt, though we did use more than a dash). I also used 1 t. dried chillis (perfect heat, maybe too much for most), 2/3 c. water, 1.5 diced tomotoes (no paste or canned tomatoes), and served over brown rice - 5/23/07

I make this dish all the time. You can get curry leaves in the indian store. Add them while you are frying the onions. Also add some parsly/ coriander-gives excellent flavor to the dish. - 11/10/07

I used Paneer instead of the chicken and thought that was yummY! I think next time I am going to try this with Tofu to cut the fat. I also only used 2 tbsp of Oil. Thanks for sharing! - 2/18/08

Even without the amount of tomato & liquid it turned out great for me. I used 2 large fresh tomatoes finely chopped, I cup of tomato sauce & 1 cup of fat free chicken stock. I like mine spicy, so, I also added 1 finely diced Habanero pepper.
I serve it over Basmati rice, and 1/4 cup of raisins. - 6/25/09

The recipe ingredients did not list the tomato or the water, so I had to guess what kind and how much tomato as well as how much water. I ended up adding Greek yogurt and some agave nectar to approximate what I was used to from the restaurant. In the end, it was delicious. - 4/25/09

Makes just enough sauce to serve on rice. An authentic taste! I just add a 28 oz can of diced tomatoes, and no water. - 2/3/09

This is an excellent dish. I am just getting into Indian food and have loved everything I have tried. I didn't make this exactly as it called for-I added diced tomatoes instead of paste and no extra water. It was so yummy. I served it over jasmine rice. - 2/21/08

I just made this for dinner and it was great! We have another, very much less healthy, recipe for this that takes two days (marinating in yogurt, etc.). While the other one has a bit more flavor, this one is so much easier and faster to prepare. I'll definitely make this one again. - 7/29/09

This is excellent, authentic, and quality.
I used 1t dried chili (plenty hot! probably too hot for many), 2/3c water, small can tomatoes, and just a dash of sea salt. I served with cauli-rice.
Thank you Pami. If this recipe is half as anti-inflammatory as I expect it to be, I am in your debt. - 4/23/07

    Excellent recipe!
If you can't find cardamon pods ( 5 pods = 3/4 tsp ground cardamon approximately).
If you can't find garam marsala (and don't want to mix and grind your own version)....use "Maya's Makeover" version of this recipe that is also in sparkrecipes. - 5/21/10

I doubled the tomato paste and the cumin powder, added 4 cups of water, and made the recipe into more of a curry. Excellent flavor. Excellent recipe. - 7/21/09

I am a big fan of Indian cuisine and this particular dish is awesome! It has a nice blend of spice and smoothness. Be daring and try something different and try this dish. You won't be sorry. - 6/13/07

One of the doctor's I work with is from India and gave me some fresh garam masala, so I am always looking for recipes. So far all have been delicious! Since I am vegetarian, I am trading the chicken for Seitan and making a paste of the spices and oil, and sauteeing it first to absorb the flavors. - 9/26/09

I LOVE this dish and can't wait to try it. My boyfriend is Indian and when I come across to Indian recipes I always ask if the ingredients listed would work bc I know sometime recipes are geared towards the mass majority rather than true to its roots. This one seems to be a winner so I will make it. - 12/2/08

I was needing a nice Indian recipe to prepare for my neighbors. They loved it. Guess that makes it a winner. - 11/10/08

Very Delicious!! Thank you for the good recipe. Everyone loved it and I will make it again soon! It's inspired me to do a lot more Indian cooking from scratch. thanks! - 1/4/08

Made this with my son. Outstanding! I thought I had Cardamom but found I didn't but it still was great. Also substituted curry for the Garam masala, which I also mistakenly thought I had. Didn't miss it a bit! Am sure with the added ingredients it will be even better! - 3/25/10
