6 large cooking aples, peeled, cored, and chopped (about 2.5 pounds)1/2 c sugar2 tsp lemon juice1/2 tsp ground cinnamon1/4 tsp ground cloves3/4 c all-purpose flour1/2 c sugar1/8 tsp salt1/4 c plus 2 tbsp butter or margarine1/2 c chopped walnuts or pecans
Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; stir well. Place apple mixture in a 2-quarter casserole.
Combine flour, 1/2 c sugar, and salt in a medium mixing bowl; cut in butter with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in chopped walnuts, and sprinkle mixture evenly over apples. Bake at 35 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until lightly browned. Yield: 8 services.
