Hamburger Tarka Dhal

Ingredients
1 13.5oz/375g bag of red lentils8c/1500ml water2 tsp ground turmeric2 tsp ground cumin1 tsp salt (or to taste)2oz/50g unsalted butter2 medium onions, chopped4 garlic cloves, chopped12oz/315g hamburgerdried red chilies, green chilies or Tabasco sauce (to taste)
Directions
Wash the lentils and then combine them with water, turmeric, cumin and salt in a large pot and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Then cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Melt the butter in a skillet or wok and saute the onions, garlic and chilies until softened.
Add the hamburger to the onion mixture, breaking it up with the spatula. Cook stirring frequently until the hamburger is cooked through and the onions and well-browned and crispy (about 10-15 minutes)
When the lentils and the hamburger/onion mix are both done, combine them (draining the fat off the hamburger mix first, if desired).
