I made this in a single-serving size with a mini crockpot (I believe it's a 1-qt size). I used 1 apple, 1 Tbsp. brown sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, 1/4 cup steel cut oats, and 1 cup water. Cooked overnight for 9 hours, and it was really good! A little mushy, but I would definitely make it again. - 2/4/10

I'm enjoying this. Like a previous writer, I doubled the recipe for my 5 qt crockpot but only added 7 cups of water. The consistency is like porridge in my book. I added a few raisins and had a half cup for a snack. Oh, by the way, the original recipe should give you 4 one cup servings. - 1/19/11

A great breakfast! It could have used 1/4 tsp. of salt but other than that, it was fabulous! One tip I learned from a similar recipe and that I've used both times I made this one is to grease the crock pot with a thin coat of butter first. It helps keep the porridge from sticking to the sides. - 5/17/09

I adapted this recipe by substituting Splenda brown sugar blend for the brown sugar and adding 1/3 cup of dried cranberries. The spark nutritional calculator gave me a calorie count for 4 servings that was 485 calories per serving! I'd suggest using half a serving to get a more reasonable portion. - 3/14/13

The oatmeal makes a difference For steel-cut oats, I would use a 1:4 ratio of oats to milk and/or water. For Old Fashioned oats, I would use a 1:2 ratio. And for quick oats, I've never tried it, but I'm told you can still do them in a slow-cooker. Just use the warming feature and 1:2 ratio. - 2/13/13
