I made this in a single-serving size with a mini crockpot (I believe it's a 1-qt size). I used 1 apple, 1 Tbsp. brown sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, 1/4 cup steel cut oats, and 1 cup water. Cooked overnight for 9 hours, and it was really good! A little mushy, but I would definitely make it again. - 2/4/10

This was so easy! I used steel cut oats and a crock pot liner. I love how the apples rose to the surface as it cooked. Next time I will cut them into smaller pieces, maybe cubed instead of sliced. Will definitely make this alot! - 11/5/09

I made this following the directions but alot of the oatmeal ended up sticking to the sides, even burning a little. I will butter the sides or spray it with Pam next time. - 10/16/11

I loved this but found the portion (4 servings) was too large. Using the recipe as posted here it made breakfast 8 servings- love it! - 1/24/11

I have been making this for months now, my husband loves it. I make five servings once a week and heat each up every morning.
I leave out the sugar and add walnuts, raisins, ground flax, whatever else is around, cinnamon, nutmeg, and applesauce (easier than cutting up apples). - 1/18/11

I'm enjoying this. Like a previous writer, I doubled the recipe for my 5 qt crockpot but only added 7 cups of water. The consistency is like porridge in my book. I added a few raisins and had a half cup for a snack. Oh, by the way, the original recipe should give you 4 one cup servings. - 1/19/11

I love oatmeal and this recipe was no exception. Veery fab tasting for sure! I used different dried fruit and cut up the apples as suggested by others. I also coated the pot with a spray of Pam. - 1/18/11

I doubled the recipe due to my big crock pot and only used 7 cups of water. I loved it and so did my husband but the kids didn't. As usual. - 11/9/10

I am a VERY picky eater and I love this recipe. I definitely want to invest in crock pot liners. The recipe made enough for breakfast for me for a few days. :) - 11/4/10

Very good! I will make this again. I will get some crock pot liners as well. I thought it was a little slimy at first but I stirred a little bit of skim milk into my bowl and then it was fabulous! It smells fantastic and is very filling!! - 1/10/10

A great breakfast! It could have used 1/4 tsp. of salt but other than that, it was fabulous! One tip I learned from a similar recipe and that I've used both times I made this one is to grease the crock pot with a thin coat of butter first. It helps keep the porridge from sticking to the sides. - 5/17/09

Used 1.5 apples and added a handful of dried cranberries, 1/4 cup flax seed, 1/4 cup of ground chia, 10 cubes of demerra sugar (cldn't find my brown sugar) then a tablespoon of brown sugar ( because I found it after I adde the demerra. Lol!). Not bad... - 11/10/14

I adapted this recipe by substituting Splenda brown sugar blend for the brown sugar and adding 1/3 cup of dried cranberries. The spark nutritional calculator gave me a calorie count for 4 servings that was 485 calories per serving! I'd suggest using half a serving to get a more reasonable portion. - 3/14/13

The oatmeal makes a difference For steel-cut oats, I would use a 1:4 ratio of oats to milk and/or water. For Old Fashioned oats, I would use a 1:2 ratio. And for quick oats, I've never tried it, but I'm told you can still do them in a slow-cooker. Just use the warming feature and 1:2 ratio. - 2/13/13

I added raisins and instead of 4 cups of water, I used 5 1/2 cups and left it on warm all night. MY husband said it was okay. But I really liked it. - 2/10/13

It tasted good enough, but the oatmeal stuck to the bottom of the crock pot. The instructions on the oats box say 1C oatmeal to 4C water. I think it probably needs a lot more water. And add a bit of salt, too. - 12/14/12

I made this oatmeal in the crockpot last weekend. It is very good, I doubled the recipe and I a still eating it. It is very filling, after the first day, I decided a 1/2c serving is plenty. - 3/3/11

This was the best oatmeal I've ever eaten! Truly incredible. - 1/29/11

I never knew you could make oatmeal in the crockpot, what a great idea! Now that I make "real" old-fashioned oatmeal instead of the flavored packets, it's a bit more time consuming but this would be an easy way to get my oatmeal in even on mornings when I'm half-asleep :) - 1/19/11
