I made 2 of these cakes for a work function and have never baked a cake in my life before - it was super easy and non-threatening, quick, and people LOVED it - even sought me out after the party to comment again on how great it was. Thanks so much for posting this! - 2/26/09

I have made this for a few years. It can be made without a mixer. You have to use a whisk, and it takes a bit longer. Make sure the batter is thick. The texture is different due to the eggs and oil missing. The cake is delicious. - 8/29/09

I made this with diet cherry vanilla dr. pepper and it gave it a slight cherry flavor and it was delicious without any topping at all. - 1/8/09

This was so delicious and so easy. I used the dark chocolate cake mix and Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper although I don't think you could taste any cherry flavor at all after baking. It was delicious plain but I topped it with a tsp of Hershey's Lite chocolate syrup and lite cool whip and choc. sprinkles :) - 9/20/09

This was amazing, this was amazing!! I made it in muffin tins so I would have portion control. A few times I drizzle ONLY a tbl of 50% less sugar chocolate syrup. Upped the calories by 30 - but hey - THIS WAS AMAZING! - 7/23/09

This is an AWESOME idea and it tasted GREAT! My husband used Diet Dr. Pepper and put warm blackberries with a tsp of chocolate syrup and a tsp of powdered sugar for my birthday. JUST AWESOME!! It was surprisingly moist, a bit flat (with no eggs), but even so it wasn't dense at all. Thanks!! - 5/8/09

I tried to use a bundt pan to make it fancy but it came out quite crumbly. TAsted good though and filled the chocolate craving so all good!! - 4/5/09

My family's favorite soda treat is Diet Cheerwine so I made this using that soda. Everybody raved about the cake and said that it is their designated chocolate indulgence now. Thanks for posting it. - 3/27/09

Maybe it didn't turn out right because I don't have a mixer but it was a crumbly mess. My boyfriend took one bite but won't eat anymore beause he found the texture too weird. I thought it tasted OK but I could taste the soda & it's definitely a light cake. - 3/20/09

I'm sorry it didn't turn out for you! I think you are right about the mixer - using an electric mixer makes the batter a little more light and fluffy.

Definitely hit the spot!! I used frozen raspberries instead of strawberries, but it was a hit!! - 2/2/09

I made this with a dark chocolate cake mix and it was very good. My SIL thought it was brownies and ate it plain. Will make again. A small dab of a fruit pie filling is a good sub for fresh fruit for just a few more calories. - 2/2/09

this recipe was FABULOUS! my family didn't even know that I "cheated" on it - they thought it was a "regular" cake topped with coolwhip! - 1/7/09

Family of 5 and we all loved it. The cake, I thought, was somewhere between a cake and a fudge brownie as far as the "chocolate" factor went. It was delicious all on it's own but the cool whip and strawberries were just the right touch. THANK YOU! Sweet tooth fix that won't leave you feeling guilty. - 10/3/13
