I tried this recipe this week. I do agree that it makes a TON of food (which is great for leftovers), but I think I will not use two lbs of meat next time, and maybe mix in some italian sausage for more flavor. Also, the cooking time was a bit long. - 6/10/09

We all loved this recipe. However, it only took 3 1/2 hours on low in my crockpot. I also used soy crumbles instead of hamburger and no one even noticed. I will definitely make this again. - 4/26/10

what do you do with the 1/3 cup of water? (i.e. when/where do you add it?) - 2/16/09

Canelli makes them as well as a few other brands.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong. But, it burned on the bottom and was really mushy, I cooked it for the time it said.. - 5/19/10

OMG, delicious! I was skeptical at first about making it in the crockpot, but this turned out to be one of the best SP recipes I've made! Thank you! - 2/9/10

Not real tasty. We may have possibly over-cooked it. We don't plan on making it again. Our crock pot doesn't have a setting for cooking on low for 5 hours. We ended up cooking it on high for 5 hours. We are still new to crock pot cooking. - 8/4/08

yeah you must have overcooked it....low and high are completely different...
If you only have high I would suggest checking it after 2 1/2 to 3 hrs.

I made this for my boyfriend and I and it was sooo wonderful!! It was super easy to make and we had so much left over we had to freeze some for later! I will make this again for sure, it is so easy. You just set it up and leave it! - 3/10/08

Great idea do not have a crock post but maybe can do it slowly in the oven. Will use less meat as well. - 6/13/21

I tried this a couple of days ago, but I changed it up a little. Since I had ground deer meat I used a pound of that and instead of only 4ounce can of mushrooms I used 2 4ounces cans, I really love mushrooms and I also added a tsp of Greek Seasoning to go with the Italian seasoning. It was tasty!! - 3/7/21

This is top notch! I used about 1 1/2 lbs ground beef & dry italian herbs. Like many other posters, mine only took 3-4 hours. My hubby, who does not watch his calories, said it was quite delicious and requested it be put in regular rotation! - 4/2/13

Made this for the first time tonight and I will definitely make it again! Took only a little over 3 hours in my crockpot to make. Love the easiness of this recipe and how delicious it turned out. - 1/1/11

This was wonderful! Rather than go for a 2nd lb of meat, I added in 3-4 handsful of chopped fresh kale to the browning meat . . . it added volume to the meat layers, plus all the green fiber and nutrients. Spinach would work, too. I also used fresh chopped mushrooms rather than canned. YUM. - 6/25/10

I used 1lb turkey and 1lb ground beef (what I had on hand) and this turned out to be AMAZING! My kids don't care for ricotta so I might try cottage cheese next time, but I thought this was fantastic! - 2/9/10

Does this require one of the larger crockpots? - 10/28/09

I have a regular crockpot on the larger side and it probably ends up 2/3 full so a bit smaller one would just be thicker :)

I have made this in my crockpot for years. I am glad to see someone come out with a recipe for sparks. - 6/7/09
