Could it get any healthier than this? (Well, yeah, I suppose I could remove the brown sugar --- but I'm not gonna!!!) ;-) [Created 2007-11-19.] Could it get any healthier than this? Ingredients
-
* (40) grams 'Bulk Barn' Store Brand "8 GRAIN CEREAL" (Bin #1529)
[Ingredients: Cracked wheat, cracked rye, barley flakes, cracked triticale, flaked corn, hulled millet, cracked oats, and flax seed.]
* (7/8) cup Water [That's 3/4 + 1/8! ;-) ]
* 'Pinch' of Salt
* (2) tbsp. Whey Protein Isolate Powder [About 10g.]
* (1) tbsp. Raisins, not packed [About 15g.]
* (1) tbsp. Pecans, chopped [About 10g.]
* (1) tsp. Brown Sugar, packed
* (1/8) tsp. Cinnamon, ground
* (1/4) cup Milk, 1%
Directions
1. In a small pot, bring 7/8 cups of water to a boil. Toss in a tiny 'pinch' of salt, and pour in the 8 Grain Cereal.
2. When it resumes to boil, reduce and simmer on low, cover, and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the other ingredients: protein powder, raisins, pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon, and milk. Stir to incorporate, and add to the pot of cooking cereal. Stir again, cover, and simmer for another 5 minutes or so.
4. Remove from heat, and let stand for a minute or two to thicken, depending on how you like your hot cereal. (I like mine thick, so I let it sit 2 - 3 minutes!)
5. Transfer to a cereal bowl, stir, and enjoy! :) [Note: This recipe could easily be multiplied to serve four. Just use 1 cup cereal, 3 1/2 cups water, 'dash' of salt, 1/2 cup protein powder, 1/4 cup raisins, 1/4 cup pecans, 4 tsp. sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, and 1 cup milk!]
