Ingredients

    6 T. sugar

    4 eggs
    2 cups 1% milk
    1/2 cup of sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/4 tsp. salt

Tips

This can be more decadent by using whole milk or cream instead of 1% milk. Alternatively, it will have fewer calories when made with skim milk.

Directions

Butter custard cups and set on jelly roll pan with a little water underneath.
Turn oven to 325 degrees F.
In a shallow saucepan on stove top, brown 6 tablespoons of sugar until it is a golden syrup, on medium heat. Pour the syrup evenly into the buttered custard cups.
In a bowl, add the 4 beaten eggs, 2 cups milk, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla and 1/4 tsp. salt and beat with a spoon or whisk, until mixed. Add this mixture to the custard cups.
Bake at 325 degrees F. for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Serve chilled. Unmold by loosening around the edges of the cup with a knife. Invert onto a plate. Serve with whipping cream ( optional) and/or berries (optional).
