Nutrition & Calorie Comments

I don't care for sour cream, so I mixed my salsa with 1 T low-fat miracle whip. It made for a wonderful dressing. My husband like it too.
too much sodium
For those of you who enjoy sour cream on your taco salad, try substituting nonfat plain greek yogurt for the sour cream. We mix salsa and greek yogurt together to use as a dressing for the taco salad.
There are so many things I can't eat in this because of a banded stomach and an intolderance for spicy things, but I think crushing the Doritos and not using shells, plus subbing with low fat cheese, will give me something I can digest.
I'll try this, with my own substitutions. Thanks for this.
Don't forget to check the sodium level in olives. I always rinse mine after opening a can.
I make a taco salad similar to this recipe but with ground turkey instead of beef, and I use my own seasonings (chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin and cayenne pepper) to keep the salt low. I also use Kraft fat free cheddar cheese and add some fresh corn (cut off the cob or frozen).
Substitute Taco Bell FAT Free Re-fried Beans for even better health benefits!
Had this for lunch on a tostada shell. Like the olives added natural fats. Thanks for sharing. Glad I had all the ingredients on hand.
I love seeing everybody's hints. Making taco salad is easy, making it healthier with less calories & fat is the challenge. Lots of good ideas.
the salad is great, but the salt intake is a lot.
try adding kidney beans for more fiber and low carb shells to save calories
I will make this taco salad recipe, because it is simple to make. There is plenty of protein in the salad. Thanks for the recipe.
Excellent. We'll make this one again. To save even more calories we used 96% lean ground beef and fat free shredded cheddar.
I have found that if you use ground chicken instead of beef it saves on calories but still gives a great flavor. This is great though.
SOMETIMES I WILL SKIP THE MEAT ALL TOGETHER, JUST LETTUCE TOMATO FAT FREE CHEDDAR SALSA AND FAT FREE RANCH DRESSING !! VERY GOOD...I WILL HAVE TO TRY THE GROUND TURKEY.
Sounds good = Would change to less carbs to decrease calories and salt.
Good recipe- I always brown my ground beef then rinse it in a collander before adding the spice packets. This rinses away extra fat.
I made this without the chips less carbs less calories and loved it.
I make a similar salad but use romaine lettuce, black beans, and veggie grounds instead of meat. Also use Pace Picante (medium) and low fat sour cream, low fat cheese, and throw in 1/2 avocado (guac made with lime juice, salt, and minced garlic). Of course you have to add some Chalula or Tapatio!
This is good. But I also use my own spices to reduce sodium. If you want to make it healther to can use fresh herbs and spices as well as using baby spinch or greens instead of lettuce. When I do use the shell usually 1 is enough. But its a family fav, because every one can change it a little
I like to use a 100 calorie dorita chip bag, crush it up and add to the taco salad-no shell - this saves calories and still gives the crunch.
I buy those low carb tortillas and bake them--saves calories, fat and carbs!!
I always buy the Pace salsa because they do not use sugar! Good recipe! Thanks
I make my own taco seasoning. That way I can limit the salt and it tastes just as great.
I do mine sometimes without a shell to save on calories and carbs, just load up my plate with lettuce. Its a nice quick refreshing dinner ot make in the summer time.
