Preheat oven to 400 degrees F, then turn down to 300 degrees F when you put the cake in the oven. Beat egg whites with salt until stiff. Beat butter and sugar together on mixer until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each. Add ground almonds, poppy seed, finely chopped apricots, orange peel, liquor, and vanilla. Mix well. Fold in egg whites, just until incorporated. Do not over mix. Bake in buttered spring form pan (8 or 9 inch) for about 30 -35 minutes, until light brown on top. Cool on rack. May sprinkle top with powdered sugar. 10 servings
