Ingredients
-
1 can (I usually do 2 cans at a time) of fat free sweetened condensed milk.
Tips
You can use this as a dipping sauce for apples once it cools.. tastes a lot like kraft caramels. You can add a little milk to a couple of table spoons to make a looser sauce and drizzle over ice cream, angel food cake etc. One of my favorite things to do is to mix 1 tbsp of the dulce de leche and 1 tbsp of natural peanut butter and use it on mini cinnamon bagles or use it for apples.
Directions
Remove the label from your can(s) of sweetened condensed milk and put in a pot. Add hot water until the can is completely covered. Boil the cans for 3 hours making sure that you add a little bit of water every 30 minutes or so to make sure the can is kept covered.
After 3 hours, remove from the water and let rest on a towel on your counter for 5 minutes. Use a can opener (I find a manual works best for this) to open the can. **The can will make a little hiss sound, and a little of the caramel may ooze out of where the can opener first punctures, but don't be alarmed.** Dump the can into a bowl.. (it will have a congealed look to it.) Whisk the dulce de leche until smooth and silky.
Serving Size: Each can makes 10 servings...each serving is 2 tablespoons each.
