My grandmother's crusty bread. This is extremely easy to make. Its great for use with soups, pastas, and as croutons. My grandmother's crusty bread. This is extremely easy to make. Its great for use with soups, pastas, and as croutons.
Number of Servings: 14

Ingredients

    1 c. milk
    1 1/2 tsp. salt
    2 tbsp. butter
    1/4 c. honey
    2 pkgs. yeast
    1 c. warm water
    3 1/2 c. flour (unbleached)
    1 c. whole wheat flour
    2 cloves garlic, crushed and minced
    Dash of each: pepper, thyme, oregano, basil

Directions

Dissolve the yeast in warm water. Scald the milk, dissolve in it the honey, salt, and butter. Let the milk cool for a few minutes. Add the yeast to the milk, add herbs and garlic. Mix. Stir in flour and cover. Let the dough double in size (approx 45 minutes), stir down, beat with a spoon. Split dough in two and form loaves. Place on cookie sheet. Let rise again. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
Tip: cover with foil for a softer crust.

    Love this bread. My husband and I make this bread almost every weekend. We love it and so do the kids. We make 2 loaves and eat one right away and save the other one for the following day. Great recipe, thanks for sharing. - 2/17/11
