Introduction

A family favorite that we learned to like as native Floridians and as residents of Gitmo Bay during our stay on the US Naval Base when stationed there in the early 1960's. Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef (or lean ground turkey)
    2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)
1 medium green pepper, diced (3/4 cup)
    1 large clove garlic, crushed
1 16 oz. can diced tomatoes
    1/3 cup raisins
    1 tablespoon chili powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/8 teaspoon ground cumin
    Fresh-ground pepper to taste

Directions

Brown beef in large heavy skillet. Drain off any fat. Push meat to one side, add oil, onion, green pepper and garlic. Saute until onion is tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in undrained tomatoes, raisins, chili powder, salt, cinnamon, cumin and pepper. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes or until flavors are blended, stirring occasionally.

Makes 4 nice servings.

** I calculated this recipe with both the beef and turkey. The calculations shown here are with beef. The calories using the turkey are 294.9 per serving.
