Introduction
These beans are available only in Goa on the West Coast of India.They make a very tasty dish and are a favourite part of the local coastal cuisine.We add fresh Prawns(Shrimp) to make the Non-Vegetarian version but they taste as great Vegetarian too.The same recipe can be used to make Black-Eyed beans(Chavali/Lobia/Rongi) and whole Lentils as well. Ingredients

1cup Dry Fava(Fajaon/Halsundey)soaked overnight
2large Shallots(Red Onions)chopped fine
5flakes of Garlic crushed
2 medium sized Tomatoes chopped
2.5tsps.Akka's Bottle Masala
1.5tsps.Akka's Kaala Masala
1.5tsps.Coriander-Cumin Powder
1.5tsp.Turmeric Powder
1tsp.Red Chilli Powder
Salt to taste
25gms.shredded Dry Coconut.
3tbsp.Sesame Oil
Directions
Pressure cook the Fava beans in water for 3-4 whistles.Dry roast the Dry Coconut till crisp and brown.Add the Akka's Bottle Masala and Akka's Kaala Masala Curry Powders to it.Grind to a powder and set aside till required.
In a Wok heat 2tbsps.of Oil and add the Shallots(Red Onions)to it.Fry till crisp and brown.Lower flame and add the Turmeric Powder to the Shallots(Red Onions).Fry for 1 minute.Add the chopped Tomatoes and fry till Tomatoes are soft and pulpy.Add the Coriander-Cumin Powder,Salt to taste and the Red Chilli Powder.Fry for 2 minutes more.Add the Dry Coconut---Masala Powder mixture and fry for 3-4 minutes more.Add the cooked Fava Beans together with the juice in the Beans.(Add raw Shrimps if desired)Cover and cook for 5 minutes more.
Heat the remaining 1 tbsp.of Oil in a Seasoning Pan.Add the crushed Garlic flakes and fry till golden.Add Asafoetida(Hing)Powder and pour over the Bean Curry.Immediately cover with lid to seal in the flavours.Keep covered for 5 minutes.Garnish with chopped fresh Coriander(Cilantro)Leaves and serve hot.This is with a thick Gravy and can be eaten with Steamed White Rice as well as Indian Breads.
OPTIONAL
Instead of Fava Beans use Black-Eyed Beans(Chavali/Lobia/Rongi) or whole Lentils both in the same measure and soaked over night.
NOTE
If using canned beans please rinse well before use.

I don't know what Akka's bottle masala or Kaala Masala are so am using my own blend of curry spices, will give it a try - sounds hot. - 3/27/10
