Ingredients

1 medium onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
3 medium carrots, chopped or sliced
100g lardons or bacon
250g red lentils washed and drained.
1.5 tsp of chili powder (or to taste)
1.7L water (adjustable)
500g passata (tinned tomato will do too but is not as thick)
Directions
Yields around 2.5 of soup which serves 12 as starter or 6 as generous main. Nutritional data based on 12 servings (about 1 cup per serving)
In a hot sauce pan fry the lardons for a few minutes, then spoon out and reserve. Cook the chopped onions, carrots and garlic in the bacon fat for 5 minutes on medium/low heat. And add the bacon and the lentils. Stir then add the water, tomato passata and chilli powder. Give a stir, cover, and simmer for 25 minutes until the lentils are soft and the carrots are tender.
Blend until nearly smooth.
Serve with some yoghurt if the heat has been miscalculated!
