Introduction

Wake up to a fragrant, healthy breakfast! Wake up to a fragrant, healthy breakfast!
Number of Servings: 4

Ingredients

For four servings (use 3-4 qt Crock Pot):

    2 apples, peeled & sliced
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/3 cup brown sugar
    2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
    4 cups water
    pinch salt

For two servings (use 2 qt Crock Pot):
    1 apple, peeled & sliced
    1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp plus 2 tsp brown sugar
    1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
    2 cups water
    dash salt

Directions

You will probably want to use a Crock Pot liner for this one -- the brown sugar makes it a little messy.

Slice the apples and place in the bottom of the slow cooker. Add brown sugar and cinnamon over the apples, then stir until mixed. Pour the oats evenly over the apples. Add water and salt. Resist the urge to stir. ;) It will mix itself when it is cooking.

Cook on low for 8-9 hours (overnight). You can turn it off when you get up in the morning and it will stay hot for a while, if you aren't ready for breakfast yet when you first get up.

Stir well before serving, making sure to get the oats out of the bottom.

I ended up adding maple syrup to my bowl as I thought it was a bit bland. DEFINITELY use the liner as recommended. I spent an hour cleaning mine. The house smelled amazing when I woke up and I loved the convenience of having a hot breakfast all ready. - 3/20/11

I Cook This On The Stove Top Using A Sweetner Instead Of Sugar & More Cinammon. Divide Into 4 Sweet Bowls & Refrigerate. In The Morning I Reheat In The Microwave & Add A Little Skim Milk - It's A Delicious Breakfast In Winter. - 6/20/10

It was pretty good, but next time I'll use steel cut oats so it's not so mushy. The kids ate it all though! - 3/24/11

I really enjoyed it. My husband thought it needed something else. He didn't like the consistency. - 1/9/11

I make a similar version to this, but instead of water I use apple cider--DEVINE! As for sogginess, make sure you are using steel-cut oats, and I only cook for 4 hours instead of 8 and use a timer. Best way to wake up in the AM. - 12/28/09
