Introduction

Quick & easy way to cook steel cut oats Quick & easy way to cook steel cut oats
Number of Servings: 2

Ingredients

    1/2 cup steel cut oats
    2 cups water
    dash salt

Directions

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients and bring to a ROLLING boil, stirring occasionally.

Cover, turn off heat. Let sit overnight.

In the morning, stir and reheat gently. Then add sweetener (splenda, honey, SF Torani syrup, etc.) as desired. Also great to stir in fruit (chopped apple, banana, pear, oranges, etc.).

Frozen fruit works great - just microwave for ~1 minute to warm the fruit first.

This stores VERY well in the fridge. I make a large batch on the weekend and put in individual tupperware containers. 1-1.5 minutes in the microwave, and it is warm and ready to eat in the morning.

This is a very easy and convenient way to remove those excuses for a nice bowl of hearty steel cut oatmeal in the morning. Thanks for the idea!
PS. I didn't have any issues with green film on my oatmeal. In the morning I enjoyed my oatmeal with a cut up apple, some cinnamon and agave nectar.

    Very Good
Warmed it up in the microwave with a little plain yogurt and added strawberries. This should take care of breakfasts for the week! I did double it. - 6/3/13

It's a simple, basic recipe that let's me add what I want to my oatmeal on a daily basis, without committing to to a specific recipe! - 12/28/12

Is the serving size 1 cup? I'd like to make this, but want to track it accurately ;) - 5/10/12

I make steel cut oats this way all the time, and have never had an off smell or any sign of the food going "off". We eat it more in cold weather, and, of course, I don't put any dairy products in the oatmeal overnight. You could certainly put the pan in the fridge overnight, but cool it beforehand! - 3/12/12

This is a great idea. I added vanilla extract and cinnimon to the water while cooking.
If your concerned about leaving it out over night, make it early enough in the evening that you can just place the pot in the fridge, in the morning add a little milk, heat and stir.

Is this really food-safe? Won't the mixture spend too long at incubation temperature? We tried this once, and the pot had a green scum and a funny smell in the morning. I've been scared to try it again.
