Introduction

This is the kind of miracle dish that can convert anyone to tofu. The Jamaican "jerk" seasoning is sure-to-please. It's sort of like barbeque and sort of like curry, savory and sweet at the same time. Just make sure you allow plenty of time for the pressing and marinating. The drier the tofu gets before you put it in the marinade, the better. It will soak up more flavor and be nicely chewy.

Ingredients

1 lb extra firm tofu, drained, sliced and pressed (see directions)
1/2 large sweet onion, roughly choppped
    4 cloves garlic
    2 Tbs fresh ginger, grated
    Juice of 2 limes
    Zest of 1 lime
    2 Tbs soy sauce
    2 Tbs olive oil
    3 Tbs pure maple syrup
    1 Tbs dried thyme
    2 tsp allspice
    1/2 tsp cayenne
    1 tsp nutmeg
    1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped (you can cut back to one or omit entirely if you like spicy)

Directions

Slice the tofu into thick slabs then lay the slices on several layers of paper towels or on a clean dish towel and place a heavy plate or skillet on top. Let it sit for an hour or two. Pressing the tofu is a way to get the extra moisture out - and the drier you can get the tofu, the more of the flavorful marinade it can absorb.
2 Puree all the rest of the ingredients in a blender or food processor to create the marinade. Place the tofu slices in a bowl, pour in the marinade, making sure to coat all the slices, and cover. Let it sit for an hour or two, flipping the slices about halfway through
3 Heat a skillet with a small amount of olive oil over medium high heat. When the pan is hot, lay the tofu slices in a single layer and saute until crispy and browned. That will take 8-10 minutes on each side.

This looks and sounds WONDERFUL. I remember loving the Jamaican Jerk chicken I ate once back before I became a vegetarian. It was the best chicken I'd ever had. I'm excited to try this with tofu. There is a jerk maranaid sold in stores though, so I'm tempted to "cheat". - 3/18/09

This was AWESOME!! I ended up pressing my tofu overnight so it was really good & drained out. My tofu ended up sitting in the marinade for 2 days because we got super busy (fridge smelled pretty great) but it REALLY soaked into the tofu. This was so flavorful and great. - 4/17/11

It was good, but I realized the allspice is not for us...:(
I added a peach glaze and it worked really good.
    Thanks for sharing.

Must divide the calories in this by 6 - looks like the person who submitted it accidentally put "1 serving" but if you read it, it does say makes 6 servings..so it's not all that high in calories after all. - 7/13/10

Holly - It looks like the submitter accidentally said this feeds only one person even though at the end of her recipe, it says "serves 6." Most people don't eat a whole pound of food, anyhow. Will try this! - 3/22/09

An easier way to do this dish is to by a bottle of Jamican Jerk seasoning. It comes in both hot and mild. If yor grocery story doesn have it - look it up online. - 7/7/12

My first try at cooking with tofu. The recipe instructions were very easy to follow. The marinade gave a delicious flavor to the meal. It will take me a few tries to get used to the texture of tofu. I will make this recipe again. - 2/13/12

Having only been vegan for 9 months now I'm still not a huge fan of tofu... this was by far the best tofu recipe I've tried. YUM! I served it on a large bed of wilted swiss chard... I can't wait to have this dinner again. - 9/12/11

    O.K.
My first tofu recipe. I followed the time suggestions for drying out the tofu and marinating. But my tofu was bland. It had no flavor. It smelled great and I love the marinate. Not sure why my tofu did not absorb the seasoning. - 8/7/11

Family liked this quite a bit. It was spicy and they ate it up. Served with some yellow rice and used some of the marinade to marinade some chicken for the one household member who doesn't eat tofu. And it was great as a chicken marinade also! - 2/22/11

amazing jerk marinade! best I've ever made - tofu was a bit mushy but I think that was just user error - 2/14/11

I think this caloric count is so wrong because the servings are set at 1 instead of 6 in the original recipe. If you are the recipe owner, maybe you can edit that....or we all just divide these calories and NaCl by 6. - 1/30/11

Two words: Fan. Tastic. This is a real winner, and has made a real tofu convert out of me. The jerk sauce would be equally good on any white meat and can be made as mild or as spicy as you'd like. The texture of the tofu was also lovely and firm. Perfect! - 1/8/11
