Ingredients

    1/4 cup margarine
    1/4 cup sugar
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp ginger
    1 tsp cloves
    1 tsp salt
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 1/4 cup flour
    3/4 tsp baking soda
    1/2 cup molasses
    3/4 cup hot water
    1 egg

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. (200 C.).
2. Cream together margarine and sugar in a mixing bowl.
3. In a separate bowl combine cinnamon, ginger, cloves, salt, baking powder, and flour.
4. Beat 1/2 tsp of baking soda into molasses until foamy. Add to margarine mixture.
5. Add 1/4 tsp baking soda to the hot water. Add this alternately with the dry ingredients to the margarine/molasses mixture.
6. Fold in beaten egg (the batter will be thin).
7. Pour into a greased loafpan and bake for 30 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.
