Introduction

We always had some variation of Mexican cakes (or Russian tea cakes or Snowballs) at Christmas so these little cookies have a tendency to brighten moods in my family and friends no matter when they are made. This variation has no nuts and has a orange flavour. Ingredients

    2 2/3 cup flour
    1/4 cup powdered sugar
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup butter
    1/2 cup shortening
    1 Tablespoon vanilla
    1 teaspoon orange extract
3/4 cup powdered sugar for coating

Directions

mix everything except the powdered sugar for coating
will form a very dry dough
place in fridge and allow to firm
preheat oven to 350
grease a cookie sheet
make approximately 1 inch balls
place balls on tray (these do not spread much if at all so you can set them close)
bake for 12-15 minutes until cookies are starting to brown around edges
let cool slightly
while still a little warm roll balls in powdered sugar
if the sugar melts onto the cookie to much for your tastes you can reroll them in powdered sugar when completely cool

    Very Good

I made this with 1/2 cup powdered sugar instead of 1/4, after seeing the 1-star review here, and the dough texture/sweetness was fine. It formed nice balls even without chilling so I think it would have been workable even with 1/4 cup. My cookies came out great. I did roll in sugar the 2nd time. - 8/5/13

A great little cookie/cake. I have also used lemon flavouring and then added 1 tsp cinnamon to the powdered sugar for a lemon spice cake. There are so many ways to make these into a variety of flavours with different coatings. - 5/1/21

    Bad
I think the powdered sugar amount is wrong?! Dough is absolutely disgusting! Basically it is just butter & shortening with some flavouring. Plus once it is mixed together it is not a dry dough which is another reason why I think it is missing more sugar! - 12/3/11
