I, too, had to look up "Thai chile" and learned that a serrano can be a substitute. According to Thai Kitchen website, it is "The most common hot chili in Thailand, a small slender chili called prik kii noo or "bird's eye chili," rated the second hottest chili, coming in just under the habanero." - 1/18/09

When using Thai bird chilies seed and get as much membrane out to reduce heat, however it still will be very hot so adjust amount and slice paper thin. Bird chilies have a flavor that should not be missed if they are available. Some Asian markets have them pickled...Chef Jim
    Use oil+soap for hands.

Not a fan of fish sauce. I substituted soy sauce instead and it was great. I like spicy so that worked well for me. Also a portion of chicken is only 2 oz., I don't think that's very realistic unless you cut itinto half in. cubes instead of slices and stir fry that way. - 7/19/09

Very good, but it took about 3 servings worth plus 1/2 cup of rice to get full! :) I would say this recipe serves 2 (or 1 for dinner with a smaller portion left for lunch the next day). Very tasty. And I just used a jalapeno for the chile. - 4/7/09

Jenvose asked what it was that had a slight licorice flavor. Thai Basil can have that taste. Regular basil not so. - 9/18/10

This sounds yummy, and I love Thai food so I will try it but checking the nutritional breakdown that you have it says 10 calories for 2oz of chicken? I get 60 calories from 2oz of boneless chicken which would make it 164 calories for a 2oz portion. - 9/18/09

WOW. Fantastic! I added all colors of bell peppers, Chinese peas and snap peas. Doubled the sauce plus added 1 t each of hoisin and soy sauces and used 13 ounces chicken. Never thought my fam would like the fish/oyster sauce but (hiding the labels) they prefered that to the soy/hoisin mixture. YUM! - 11/18/09

Freaking delicious! (I'm eating it RIGHT NOW...) I'll admit, I had a moment of consternation as I tried to figure out what a "Thai Pepper" was, but that's okay. I ended up using an eighth of a bell pepper instead (as I'm a bit wussy when it comes to spice) and some red chili flakes. Nommers! - 9/6/09

Made this recipe because it was a way to use the abundant basil growing in my garden now. Hubby and I were awed at how good it was. Only had hoisin sauce and soy sauce on hand, so subbed those. Subbed 2 chili pequins for the bird pepper. Next time more! I'll also try with shrimp and tofu. - 7/21/09

made this last night!! Delicious:) I had it over 3/4 cup of jasmine rice. The only thing I changed was that I used extra virgin olive oil (2tbs) and I made it two servings instead of four. Need a little more for dinner:) Anyone who said the taste was low use the evoo instead of a light olive oil - 11/18/09

Sounds great! For those who found it too spicy, use jalapeno peppers. I will use a Thai blend of spices (Spice Hunter) and true Thai basil. Thai basil does have a more pronounced anise flavor thaen sweet/green.Italian basils. Can't wait! Thanks - 7/19/09

Tasty and easy but quite salty; I'd suggest cutting back on the fish sauce. I did omit the sugar so that probably added to the saltiness but still tasted great. I followed someone else's suggestion and used 1/2 tsp pepper flakes instead of Thai peppers; that & the chili powder gave it a nice heat. - 5/21/16

This was delicious! I used leftover chicken breast, lightly steamed brocolli before adding at the end with basil. Very quick, everyone loved!! I drizzled about 2 tbsp of Yoshida's Original Gourmet Sweet and Savory Quick Marinade at the table, added a nice sweet touch. Will definitely make again! - 4/14/15

I agree with Cookiejam. You can use habaneros, but will miss out on the flavor of the chili and just get the HOT. Thai chilis are hot, but they have an elegant flavor habs do not. The concept of "fish sauce" really turned me off, until I ate Thai food. Soy sauce is a poor substitute. - 6/23/13

Sorry, Thai Chili is most commonly called Bird chili ( Prik Chi A), not birds eye (prik kii noo) which is small, hard and very hot. The prik kii noo has almost no flavor, only bitter heat. Birds eye is 1/4 the size of Bird chili. Most super markets list Bird chiles as "thai Chili" Check Whole Foods - 6/4/12

Just made the dish and I used serrano peppers instead because I couldn't fit thai chiles. It made the dish very spicy but still good. Next time I'll only use one or maybe half the pepper but if you like spicy go for two peppers.....Yummy! - 1/25/11

I almost used a serrano, but wasn't sure of any flavor difference, so I opted against any pepper at all, using extra chili powder at that point of the recipe, the lower heat was just right for our 8 year old. My hubby would have liked it better if it was 'saucy'. I LOVED the flavor! - 11/5/09

I noticed a mild taste of something that was very like licorice. I smelled each of the ingredients seperately and can't pinpoint it. Can anyone else perhaps provide some insight? I'd like to try again, but perhaps change that flavor a bit. - 10/16/09
