I use chicken and chili seasonings instead of ham. A Little tip when making any bean soup- always add carrots- avoid flatulence! - 2/22/09

I loved this soup! I used the review and added carrots and no gas! I added a few more tomatoes to thicken it up. Don't worry about the extra calories...it is so filling you don't really need a full serving and the protein and fiber keep you full for a long time! - 5/7/10

I made this but w/o the tomatoes and only 1/2 the packet seasoning. NOTE the calories are WRONG on this, it has 120 for the beans listed twice. - 1/3/13

I'm alergic to pork. Can you believe that? I love ham! I discovered I can use smoked turkey legs as a substitute.
I make large quainities of this soup in various ways but changing up the spices. It's always a hit.

You can use sausage, smoked turkey parts or a ham bone as an alternative to ham hocks.

Did not care for this soup. Think it was the tomatoes. Wanted the more traditional, like my Grandma used to make bean soup. - 11/29/13

My DH and I love this soup; make it every time we have a ham bone-- always plenty of meat for soup left on the bone. I leave out the tomatoes and the seasoning packet, adding more garlic and a little red pepper flakes. - 4/8/13

This is a great soup. Have made it many times. I do not use the seasoning packet at all - just don't like the flavor. Add own seasoning instead. It can be varied and adjusted to taste in so many ways. - 3/14/13

I didnt have 15 bean mix so used 2 cups variety of dried beans and lentils that i have around. I used 4 cups beef broth and 4 cups water along with a carrot, fresh tomatoes, celery and increased to 2 tsp chili powder. I cooked it in crock pot on low for 12 hours. I served it with many grains bread - 1/1/12

if you add a pinch of backing soda to the water you soak the beans in you will avoid many embarrasing situations later ;) - 10/17/11

This was ok. Took a bit of time to cook though. I substituted beef shanks (seared) in place of the ham and ommitted the chili powder and used the seasoning packet that came in the bean bag. My husband who generally does not like bean soups/stews really enjoyed it. - 3/16/11

I looked at three recipe's for ham and bean soup and combined. I used everything in this recipe plus 1/2 ring of polish kilbasa, no chile or tomatoes but added carrots and 3 white potatoes, celery, more spices, chicken broth, sauted mushrooms/onions & garlic, added some water and it was great. - 1/9/10

Love this but sub a smoked turkey leg for the ham - just pull it out at the end, remove the skin, chop the meat & return meat to the pot. It adds a really nice smokey flavor to the broth & is a little less salty than the ham. - 8/16/09

Very yummy and tasty, always wanted to try this but was afraid my family wouldn't care for it.. Needless to say my picky eaters even loved it. My hubby had seconds and so did my son. I didn't find the calorie content too high since it was an entire meal in itself and a generous serving size! - 3/30/09

I used finely chopped onion, celery, green & red peppers. When putting the cut ham back into the pot I added minced garlic, oregano, basil & a bay leaf. I left out the seasoning packet that comes with the 15 bean mix. - 12/28/08
