Garam masala is an Indian Spice, it means Hot (Garam) Spice (masala). you can make it at home by mixing the hot spices like cloves, bayleaf, chillie, nutmeg, cinnamon, black cardamom, peppercorns etc. - 6/11/08

Delicious - didn't have garam masala in my grocery store, so I added coriander, cumin, chili powder, and a little smoked paprika. I am not a fan of tahini so I only added 1 tbsp. This is delicious - the creaminess of the avocado really adds to it! - 2/21/09

Yum yum yum! Only things I changed were: doubled the indian spice used lime juice instead of lemon and through in a tsp of sesame seed oil since i didn't have any tahini. - 11/13/08

I already had a new container of Sabra hummus with the roasted garlic, so I just beat in that avocado and tweaked with some more lime/lemon juice and the cumin and I was good to go! Yummy!!

This was highly recommended on a 'favorite Spark recipe' thread and I can't wait to try it! I have a very ripe avocado just waiting to be used. Thanks for the suggested alternatives for the Garam Masala, as don't have any on hand, and have never used it. And I always love extra garlic! Thanks! - 6/19/08

Save on calories and make it tastier by adding more garlic, more cumin, and more tahini, and put only one or two tea spoons of it on your salad. I think most calories here are from the fat in the tahini and avocado, but it is healthy fat, so go ahead and enjoy. Never tried it with yoghurt. - 2/13/08

I find it necessary to know how much a serving is before I would eat this. After all, that's what most of us are doing on this site - watching our nutrition intake, is it not? - 10/15/14

Delicious! No Tahini or garam masala. Lime/citron (or whatever those round green things are in Yaounde, Cameroon) substitutes well for lemon. Great on a wrap.

I will use peanut butter in this instead of tahini. It changes the taste a bit so I don't think I will do the spices here, but I love avocado's so will try them in it and chance the peanut/avocado mix isn't weird. - 7/11/10

This is probably the best hummus I have ever eaten. I did not use the Garam Masala, just used a bit of chili powder and paprika. The avocado adds such a creamy texture. I served this to three friends and we all agreed it was fabulous. - 6/9/10

Tahini is just ground sesame seeds. Add whole seeds to garbonzos first to make them into paste.
Also, if you are unsure about buying garam masala you can just use cumin, cinamin, and red chil pepper flakes to get the idea.

Garam Masala is a spice mixture from India. It is somewhat similar to curry powder. Find it in the international food section of the grocery store. (Perhaps the previous comment mixed it up with "Masa Harina"). - 2/17/08

Tahini is found in two places. 1 by the peanut butter. it has another name. seasme butter. Also you can find it in a dairy case as well. Garam Masala is kind of like flour used in some mexican dishes. Bob Red mill makes this product. You may beable to find this in the baking isle/internaial isle - 2/17/08

Sure hope I can find that Tahini paste. I've never used it, so I'm unsure where to find it in the grocery store. I'm looking forward to making this. It should be healthier than the sour cream ranch dip that I love dipping baby carrots into. - 2/13/08

    JAH,

Cumin is a spice- it should be in the regular spice aisle. If not, check the ethic foods section. You should also be able to find tahini in the ethnic section as well (it's a thick paste that usually comes in a can). I've never used garam masala in my hummus.
