Ingredients

8 ounces flour (about 1.5 cups)
    1 teaspoon yeast
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 fluid oz. plain yogurt
    4 fluid oz. warm water
    cooking oil (soybean, canola, whatever)

Directions

Dissolve sugar and yeast in the warm water. Measure the flour and salt into a large bowl. When the yeast water is foamy, add it to the flour, and add the yogurt, too. Mix it up with a spoon, then your hands, until it comes together.

Knead it on a floured surface for about 5-10 minutes. Put back in bowl, cover it tightly with cling wrap, and let it rise for 1/2 hour.

Use a large, nonstick pan if you have it. Heat it on high until hot, then turn it down to between Med. and High.

Roll out 1/2 the dough. Prick it with a fork all over. Lightly brush with oil, then slap that side down on the pan. Lightly brush the topside with oil.

Watch the bread! When it's brown, turn it over. It will burn if you don't watch it.

Makes 2 large plate-sized naan (I listed as 8 servings)

Very yummy! I baked mine under the broiler for 5 minutes (flipped once in the middle) and it came out delicious. Went perfectly with chicken tikka masala. - 6/1/08

Agree with everyone else, it is great bread. So easy, so quick.
Another poster asked "I dont understand these directions. So you just cook it on the hot pan, and not in the oven?!"
the answer is YES! YES! Just like tortillas. Although I may try broiling like other posters.
    Thanks!

This is so easy and delicious. I divided the dough into 6 pieces instead of 2 and it made 6 good sized pieces of Naan. I cooked it on a cast iron skillet. Better than any of the naan I get at the grocery store. - 5/19/09

Made for my hubbie. He loves naan. I used whole wheat flour, so it was a bit heavier. (Hubbie said it was really good that way too.)I added garlic and broiled it. It took about 5 min on each side. Thanks for the recipe!!! - 1/8/10

I used sour cream in place of yogurt cuz that's what I had on hand. Used I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray in place of oil to cut down on calories/fat. Not quite as good as the regular way of doing it but still good and knowing it's a little healthier makes it even better! Thanks for the idea - 10/9/09

Couldn't believe how easy and authentic this was! Next time I'll try cooking it under the broiler to reduce calories. Was better than store-bought which is sometimes too greasy. - 1/25/09

Oh, this is just wonderful! I used whole wheat flour, too, because it's what I keep in the house. I followed the instructions exactly, and DH wanted to accuse me of putting store-bought naan in the pan! 😃😃 Thank you!! - 9/1/20

Who knew I could make amazing naan! I doubled the recipe to accommodate an entire package of dry yeast. I also used milk because my yogurt went bad, but will definitely try with yogurt next. I also used half whole wheat flour, no problem. Oil in the pan makes "prettier" naan and it definitely tastes - 8/31/17

This was my first attempt making any type of bread, and I was surprised how easy it was! This tasted exactly like the naan I've had at Indian restaurants. I love garlic so I added 2 cloves to the dough to give it more flavor. I could not stop eating it while I was cooking the rest of dinner! - 5/20/12

Very tasty! It doesn't taste quite as good as the naan I'm used to at restaurants, but those are probably dripping in ghee, so this is a great healthier alternative. - 3/15/12

Can this be frozen? I would like to make fresh naan for an Indian dinner party, but it's 16 guests and 4 hosts, that's a lot of work to do in one day. - 3/1/12

For some reason I was intimidated by making naan. This recipe is so easy and so good- no more fear! This is better than any flatbread I've bought in the store, and I definitely think it is going to become a staple in our house (my husband actually requested that!) - 8/1/11

Learned how to make naan recently. I use grapeseed oil instead of ghee and don't brush them with oil after to keep the calorie count low. Delicious treat with stews and chili! - 2/22/11
