Introduction

A tasty variation on the traditional popper. My hubby likes these for superbowl sunday. You can also vary the recipe by adding 2 -4 T fat free sharp cheddar shreds to the cream cheese mixture. Also you can use panko crumbs for a crispier coating. Make these at least once before serving to company, as it takes a knack to get them to come out nice looking. Ingredients

    20 whole,jalapenos
1 c. fat free cream cheese
1/4 tsp taco seasoning or chipotle powder
    1/2 tsp garlic powder
    1 c. bread crumbs, plain
1/4 c, finely diced green chiles or jalapenos, depending on heat preference
    dash salt
    2 egg whites
    cookingspray

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
Mix together the eggwhites and a tsp water in a small bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, salt, pepper, taco/chipotle seasoning and garlic powder. Set aside.
Combine cream cheese and diced jalapenos in a small bowl. (Or fat free cheddar shreds if you prefer-calorie count will slightly higher)
Cut jalapenos in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds. Stuff each jalapeno half with equal portions of the cheese mixture. Place the halves back together and secure with toothpicks. Dip each stuffed jalapeno in the egg mixture and then coat with the crumb mixture. Arrange the breaded peppers on a baking sheet.
Bake in preheated oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes.

Make sure you use panko breadcrumbs. Slice the pepper instead of halving... and blanch for 2 min as someone said before stuffing. Spray tops with lots of cooking spray... they come out quite tasty. I added a bit of cheddar inside. Also, the chopped jalapeno was redundant. My peppers were very HOT ;) - 2/19/09

I make poppers without breading. I cut the pepper top to bottom, de-seed and put in the cheese of choice or availability. Place on a baking sheet or other recepticle for cooking and put in an oven at 350 or on the grill until the cheese melt. Quick, easy, delicious. - 7/8/08

My hubby made 90 of these recently. He cuts them in 1/2 & puts the cream cheese mixture in and then breads them. He breads them cut in 1/2. He uses italian style bread crumbs, ff cream cheese and low fat shred cheese and adds diced up turkey bacon and green onions to the mix. Then freeze in bags. - 10/2/09

I'll be giving these a try soon. Take the seeds and ribs out of the jalapeno if you don't want it to be as hot/spicy. And rinse your hands in milk to take the bite off of your fingers. - 12/22/08

Oh my gosh, these are better than "real" fried jalopena poppers. I absolutely loved them and so did my husband. We served them on Super Bowl Sunday and we WILL be having them again. Excellent! - 2/3/09

I made these yesterday, and I thought they were pretty good. The only thing I would do differently would be the breading--either use more taco seasoning or flavored bread crumbs--that part was a little bland. We used plain non-fat yogurt as a dipper which was also delicious. Thanks for the idea! - 2/2/09

Now, I am NOT a wuss. :) I love love love spicy food, and I love jalapeño poppers. You have no idea how happy I am to see a healthy alternative! I was seriously just sipping hot sauce to make up for my cravings. - 12/22/08

These poppers are great. I have made these a few times. I like to leave some on the seeds from the Jalapeno to give a little more heat. - 3/1/09

These are great. My grocery was out of jalapenos so I got some banana peppers and they were so good. I used the panko bread crumbs and they were so crunchy and hubby loved them. Can't wait to make with jalapenos. - 2/1/09

We made these with panko, some with cheddar, some with cream cheese, some with the cream cheese/chili mix. They were all SO GOOD, but the chili mix ones almost KILLED ME! LOL This is going on my favorites list. - 5/3/10

I am thinking about using low fat not fat free cream cheese next time as I miss the 'true' cream cheese flavor. It is much hotter than the frozen ones I usually buy. - 3/6/10

One question, in the original photo, the peppers seem to be coated on the top.
If we are to place the halfs together and secure with toothpicks, then, how are we to coat the top half (the cheese half).

Unsure what photo you mean, as I there is not one with my recipe. When I do the poppers, the inside halves face each other, and the entire outside is coated. SOme of the coating may rub off on the part that is resting on the pan, but otherwise, they are coated all over. Hope this helps.

everybod(about 20 people) at my tailgate party loved these. A great alternative to the full fat version. I used panko crumbs, and made half with cheddar added, and half just the cream cheese. Because every jalapano varies in spiciness, some poppers were hotter than others. - 2/7/11

Hubby loves these when we're out, and he's a total junk-food junkie. There's no stopping him! As such, I can't wait to try this recipe, and since I'm such a wuss, with some pimiento peppers (milder than jalapenos!). YUM! - 7/11/08

it really depends on the kind of jalapeno you use ... depending on the crop, when it was harvested, and how many seeds it contains will determine the spicyness. - 7/8/08

Spicier than I expected, I must be a wuss! I love the ones in the bars and these would be great if they weren't so spicy. I plan to try sweet peppers next time. - 6/3/08

For people that don't like or can't handle the jalepenos maybe they could do the same thing with the small sweet white peppers. I've made these for us and they are NOT hot or spicy. - 1/31/08

I just made these and they turned out great. I changed the recipe a bit by mixing the taco seasoning and the cream cheese together and adding Mexican cheese. I also just cut the tops off the peppers and scooped out the seeds and ribs instead of cutting it lengthwise - 3/24/12

Made these for a Super Bowl party, they were a hit! Yummo!
We decided to bake them a little longer than the instructions this helped lessen the heat of the peppers. Also wear gloves when halving and deseeding the jalapenos, it made my hands burn! Great party recipe- makes a lot!

Someone gave me fresh jalapenos, so I made poppers with this recipe, I did some change. I used weight watchers cheese and I had to double dip the jalapenos twice in the bread crumbs would not stick on them.. Next time I will use the other kind of bread crump. - 7/13/11

I tried these tonight and my mouth was on fire. My wife who loves spicy food more than I do couldn't eat them either. Nothing but heat, couldn't get any flavor off of them from the burning.

Have had poppers all my life and never had any this hot. Wonder why the restaurants aren't this hot?
