Introduction

One of my favorite recipes from my great-grandma's book. One of my favorite recipes from my great-grandma's book.
Number of Servings: 92

Ingredients

    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1 c. butter, softened
    2 Tbsp. water or milk
    3 Tbsp. treacle
    1 egg
    3 1/4 c. flour
    2 tsp. baking soda
    2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 1/2 tsp. ginger
    1 tsp. cloves
    1/2 tsp. cardamom seeds (optional)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350˚F. Combine sugar, butter, water, treacle and egg in a large bowl. Blend well. Mix all remaining ingredients in another bowl, then add gradually to wet mixture until blended thoroughly. Divede dough into thirds. Place two thirds, wrapped in plastic, in refrigerator. Roll remaining third to approx. 1/8 in. thickness and cut out your favorite shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Roll out the next third and do the same until all dough has been cut and placed on sheets. Bake 7-10 minutes or until “set.” Immediately remove cookies from sheets (or they will quickly become irremovable) and place on cooling racks. Frost as you wish.
Makes 84-96 cookies.

These were amazingly good! We only got 73 cookies out of the recipe, but had the dough been rolled out a little more expertly (ie, not by my 3 year old!) we would have gotten close to the full amount. They are yummy, easy and perfect with a cup of coffee. Thanks so much for sharing your recipe! - 12/11/10

THANK YOU!!! I have been looking for this cookie since it became a running plot point on "As The World Turns". I did make 2 alterations: Splenda over sugar & tub yogart spread over butter. It still works??? - 6/8/09

It is also traditional to put an almond sliver on each cookie before baking. - 12/16/10
