I have made this twice now. I add powdered garlic and a sage leaf. I cube the ham and brown it with some onion about an hour prior to the beans being done. The browned ham and onion really add a lot of flavor. - 1/9/11

I make this all the time, I add chopped onion and carrot plus either fresh garlic or garlic powder. I also use ham with less fat then that that comes from the traditional "hambone" but still gets the same great flavor... - 4/12/10

My mom has made this as have I for years. We love it. I add 1 onion (quartered or in eights) for more flavor. Server with cornbread or jalapeno cornbread! Yum. - 1/28/09
