These are so good! I used sushi grade brown rice & cooked the lentils & rice with a low sodium veggie broth. Even my meat eating friends LOVE them :) I end up with almost 16 patties but they freeze well. Now I make a double or tripple batch to have lots of extras to freeze Thanks. - 4/16/08

These were very good...But the calorie count is way off.
It clearly say uncooked rice...which has way more calories in a cup. I posted a corrected, recipe...You may look for it.

    TY....Good recipe

These were great! I added the spices(heaping measuring spoons)to the rice and lentils as they were simmering. I carefully pulverized the quick cooking oatmeal with a hand held blender and added it to the hot lentils and rice when they were done and mixed well. Cool add fine minced onions & gr.carrot - 2/10/10

These things are HUGE! And good. I am the only one in our house that would even attempt to eat them. Which is fine. I love them. I noticed after sitting in the refrigerator overnight or a few hours before cooking them helped them to stay together and helped with the flavor. - 6/17/10

My entire family enjoyed these burgers immensely.. We used a circular cookie cutter to get the shape. It is very ideal to freeze themas well, and cook straight from the freezer. - 10/26/07

These are excellent. I followed the recipe exactly and made 8 very large patties. They freeze well and reheat in the microwave without a problem. I didn't use bread or bun, just topped with 1/2 avocado (sliced), 1 Tbsp low fat sour cream and 2 Tbsp chunky salsa. Yumm! - 1/25/10

Sorry, but this was not a winner at our house.
My boys found it to be tasteless, and one did not even want to try it. I found it to be interesting, but not very tasty.
I used a burger press to make the burgers, but still found they did not stay together well. Probably will not make these again.

I thought these were very good. I used shortgrain brown rice, and also added a grated green bell pepper and about 2 cups sliced mushrooms plus sesame seeds pressed into the formed patties. It makes a whole lot more than 8 servings! I will definitely make this again and again. - 2/17/08

I made these for the first time today.Cooked the lentils&rice for only 30 minutes. When I started mixing the ingredients (I used oatbran instead of oatmeal) I was initially worried that they would not stick but after I used the potato masher and then my hands to form the patties was fine.8 good size - 5/3/10

WOW! I made a couple changes because I was out of lentils (kidney beans) and carrots (radishes, believe it or not) and they were wonderful. Even my daughter, who HATES radishes will devour these. - 6/4/10

As others have noted, the calories on these is completely inaccurate. With that said, I'm fairly convinced these are the perfect food. Endlessly modifiable, there is always a batch in my freezer. I bake them to keep them together better but the key is in smashing up the rice so it binds well. - 1/28/12

I find the red lentils to be a good consistency for lentil burgers, more so than the other colors available. I use raw garlic instead of garlic powder and I add a little cumin, as well. These are delicious wrapped in big lettuce leaves (or other greens, like collards). - 1/16/13

In response to some other comments, this seems pretty true to the nutrition values stated. I did a remake of the recipe, adding spices & 1 Tbs of olive oil (to help bind it together and add healthy fat). Produced 10 patties--at about 157 calories each. So, pretty close, and versatile, too.

Wow- much better than I thought a non-meat burger would taste! I used some overcooked (mushy) brown rice. I cooked the lentils with a beef boullion cube, drained, and then mixed in rice and other ingredients. I used a Tb of lower-salt seasoning salt and a TB of Mrs. Dash. Bake at 400. Made 10! - 1/29/12

Not bad for vegan! I added all ingredients to the still warm R&L mix. Had no problem with not holding together. Added a really spicy mixture I got in Italy, along with chili powder and cumin. Had it on an Arnold's sandwich thin with Tzatziki sauce. Glad it freezes well! - 6/24/10

The first time around they turned out great. I did add more seasoning to them, though. But after I took some out of the freezer for the second time around they came out very soft and could barely keep together. Another good point is that me and my boyfriend will probably get 4 meals out of them! - 6/15/08

This is one of my all timefavorites! My husband the carnivore loves them, as do I! I substitute a chile/salt/limon seasoning for the other seasonings called for, which assds some spice, and sometimes I chop cilantro into the mixture, too. I always end up with 9 instead of 8. - 7/15/10

This recipe is easy and the burgers are pretty good. Definitely a recipe that I will continue to use. There wasn't a ton of flavor to them, but nothing you can't fix with some mustard and a pickle or seasoning. Calories are WAY off! If you make 16 patties (instead of the 8), it's about 100 each. - 10/1/11

I had "finely" grated the carrots and onion as recommended and had not problem compacting the patties with the warm lentils and rice. Needed more spice and a dollop of ketchup, but I enjoyed one for lunch, sans bun. Pretty good! But my family won't partake. - 7/17/11

I made this last night as part of my Sparks meal plan. Like other lentil burgers I've tried, I couldn't get a firm patty out of the mixture, but it held up ok. My husband suggested adding a good Indian Curry. It was a perfect addition to the recipe! We will make this again with the Curry. - 7/7/11

First, you should know that the nutrition information is off; each serving has about twice the calories, carbs and protein indicated. Second, these are quite bland. I added cumin and chili powder (only 1 tsp each) but that wasn't enough. I'd add a lot more seasoning next time. - 4/18/11

I enjoyed these, but I'll definitely up the spices next time; maybe some hot & soy sauces+1 tsp ea dried oregano and parsley! I'll also simmer the rice and lentils in vegetable broth next time. Use a stand mixer to combine the cooled ingredients; the patties stayed together perfectly while frying! - 3/21/11

I made the burgers by the recipe, but felt that the frying was too dry to get a good crust on the outside. I added a couple Tablespoons of Canola oil with the next batch, and they had a great crunchy texture to the outside. I served as a cheeseburger, w/ketchup but no bun. Son10 likes them! HURRAY! - 1/19/11

I was so looking forward to adding this recipe to my box, but it just didn't work out. The patties wouldn't stay together, and the flavor was so bland. The only good, savory flavor came from the browning from the skillet. I will try adding andouille sausage to the leftovers. Disappointed :( - 11/14/10

I have to ask the recipe's contributor, but how do you manage to keep them together? Is it the type of oatmeal or the type of rice which provides binder to hold its shape. I gave up and sprinkled a little Parmesan cheese on the surface of my GF grill & on the top of the patties to "glue" together - 11/30/09

This made 13 burgers that tasted OK but did not hold together well. It would have been helpful if the recipe had stated that they need to sit in the fridge for some hours. Some added flax seed or chia seed might help them to hold together. They need more salt and some spices, which would be helpful - 9/28/20
