Introduction

This recipe was a finalist in the SparkPeople Un-Chained Recipe Contest!

I chose to re-make the Crunchwrap Supreme from Taco Bell because Taco Bell used to be one of my favorite fast food restaurants. Also, it is still my boyfriend's favorite fast food chain and nearly every time he goes there, he will order a crunchwrap supreme.

The funny thing is that most Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes are fairly simple to make... so I knew that it would be fun, delicious, and not too challenging to re-make this item!

Number of Servings: 4

Ingredients

4 Mission "Plus" Heart Healthy Flour Tortillas
    4 corn tostada shells
1 pound (16 ounces) 96% extra lean ground beef
    1/2 cup water
    2 Tbsp minced garlic
6 ounces tomato paste, no salt added
4 Tbsp fat free sour cream
1 Tbsp Mrs. Dash Southwest Chipotle blend
1/2 tsp Goya Sazon seasoning (1/2 packet)
    2 Tbsp salsa

Directions

In a hot pan, cook the garlic until it just turns brown. Add ground beef and cook until no longer pink. Drain fat from pan.

To the beef, add tomato paste, water, Sazon, and Mrs. Dash. Mix until combined, reduce heat to low, and cover.

Place one of the tortillas in another pan. Flip when heated through.

To the face-up side, add one quarter of the beef mixture making sure to leave a 2" border of the tortilla with no beef. Top with one tablespoon of the salsa.

Spread 1 tablespoon of the sour cream on one side of a tostada shell. Place the tostada shell, sour cream side facing down, on top of the beef mixture.

Gently wrap the edge of the tortilla around the tostada until it makes a secure pocket.

Flip the assembled tortilla and brown the folded side to secure it together.

Repeat this for all 4 servings. One tortilla "crunchwrap" per serving.

Where is the shredded lettuce? Where is the freshly chopped tomato? To me it can't be a crunchwrap without these two healthy ingredients. I understand the not including cheese in the recipe but why skip the fresh veggies? - 11/10/09

In my blog, I explain that I forgot to buy lettuce, which is why I left it out. If you decide to add it, there will be a negligible change in nutritional value. I also do not like tomatoes which is why I used salsa instead. It's very simple to cater this to your own likes and dislikes! :)

Besides adding lettuce and tomato, I think I'd use ground turkey and add chili powder and cumin instead of the sazon. That way you reduce the calories and the sodium. - 11/16/09

Excellent work on recreating this recipe! I've been craving taco bell but have been staying away from fast food. Now I don't have to!!! There are so many combinations that can be done with recipe. Thanks for sharing! - 1/20/10

This meal turned out better than I had imagined. My only issue with it was that it tasted more like Sloppy Joe meat than taco meat. I'll be trying this again, but with variation. - 5/8/10

It was good and we all liked it, but to call it a restaurant makeover is hard to swallow when the tomatoes and lettuce are not included. Also needs a low-fat nacho cheese sauce sudh as Knouse Low Fat Nacho Cheese Sauce with 1.5gms of fat 1/4 cup. - 1/8/10

    Reply from THENEXTJESS (1/8/10)
Remember that it's not all about fat and Calories. Look at the sodium content of nacho cheese sauce. Look at the saturated fats, not just regular fat.

Also, as I said in another comment, I didn't add lettuce because I didn't have any on hand and I dislike tomatoes so I didn't include them.

    :)

Sounds good. I'll have to try this one with two exceptions. I would put lettuce and chopped onion on mine. I read you did not have lettuce which happens to me all the time. I either have too much lettuce in the house or too little. Thanks for sharing the recipe. - 1/8/10

This sounds really good and will have to try but am looking for a msg free sazon seasoning. Goya sazon seasoning contains msg which isn't good for my family's ADD. - 11/18/10

Great idea!! No matter if you stick to the original recipe or tweak it to you taste buds, meat stuffed in a doughy pocket is always fab!! Love it!! - 2/3/10

I used the wrong size tortillas. I used what I had on hand (small whole wheat) rather than the large ones. But VERY good. My boyfriend loves it! - 1/11/10

I'm going to try this with my version of taco bell spicy chicken (which is just pulled chicken cooked in enchilada sauce with taco seasonings.) I already make spicy chicken burritos which I miss dearly since they got rid of spicy chicken. But now I can have the spicy chicken crunchwrap too. Thanks! - 1/5/10

Thank you for posting this. This is a good base recipe for things to add. I will save this recipe to make again. i added refried beans in place of the meat, onions, olives, jalapenos, and tomatoes. - 9/25/17

    Bad
I am not sure If I can rate this NO STARS, so I will give it one. Congrats on being in a contest because this came out AWFUL. I would rather use cumin, peppers, and chilis to make it taste better and lower sodium, likewise, the fresh veggies (lettuce and tomato) missing makes the recipe totally miss - 9/16/13

Tomatoes don't sit well in my stomach so I was happy to see you omitted them. I liked the fact that variations could be done with it as I like Crunchwraps too. High 5s from me. My husband thought I had stopped to get them until he saw no nacho cheese sauce or tomatoes. He added to his. Thank you. - 8/9/12

If you use ground turkey you can save even more calories and once you spice it up, you hardly even notice it's turkey. Also, as side note, if you use fat free sour cream, you swap fat calories for sugar which is how they give it flavor. Try using fat free greek yogurt, so flavorful, thick & creamy - 6/29/12

I make this regularly but w/seasonings, lettuce, tomatoes, and black olive slices. I skip the salsa in the wrap as we like to add it on top. Even if you dont have lettuce, or toms, its always better to at least mention them since Taco Bell adds them. Rating based on this recipe, not mine. =] - 6/28/12

I'd brown up the beef first, then saute the garlic in pan juices--less chance of it burning and becoming bitter. I agree with up-thread comments--needs shredded lettuce; use cumin, onion powder, dash cayenne (opt), & chili powder--not the Sazon! - 6/28/12

I won't eat at Taco Bell so the fact that other members don't like the recipe has "changed" means nothing to me. Adding lettuce sounds like a great idea to me.
FYI Salsa IS tomatoes with seasonings. lol
Thanks for the recipe. It sounds DEE-LISH!

I used to work at Taco Bell and the size of tortillas they use are 12 in, Its hard or almost impossible to find these in a store. If you use a 10 in, you can also use a soft shell size tortilla and make it close that way. I am making this tonight for my family. They LOVE the crunchwraps. - 4/20/11

I appreciate the effort it takes to recreate a restaurant recipe into a healthier version, but unfortunately we did not care for this. It turned out just ok but tasted nothing like a crunchwrap from Taco Bell. - 1/23/10

This sounds yummy, although, I would also add the lettuce. I would probably prefer the salsa to the tomatoes because of additional flavor. I also would add some avocado. More calories, I know, but it is so good for you. Will definitely try this. - 11/21/09

Taco Bell is a MAJOR favorite of mine and I never let myself eat there. This item reminds me of the Cheesy Cordita Crunch I was fairly addicted to for a while. I'm going to love this recipe when I have my Taco Bell cravings, thanks! - 11/4/09

If one needs to lower the sodium, Chef Meg has a nice Mexican seasoning mix with negligible sodium, just swap it out. This remake author says she had no lettuce, happens all the time. Both tomato paste and salsa have tomatoes, but still different from raw diced tomatoes. Add what you want. Tasty!! - 6/28/12
