Number of Servings: 1

Ingredients

    1/4 cup Irish oats
    1 cup soy milk
1/2 ounce walnuts, chopped (about 7 walnut halves)
    2 teaspoons maple syrup
    1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary
    1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Tips

Prefer your oats a bit sweeter? Add a tablespoon of raisins or dried cranberries.

Can't find Irish oats? Swap in steel-cut, but be sure to soak them overnight.

Directions

Place all ingredients in a food storage container, mix and allow to soak overnight. Soaking the oats and nuts allows your body to digest them more easily and saves time in the morning.

Heat and eat, adding water to thin oats to the desired consistency.

Eating this right now. Holy cow! So Good!!!! I used steel cut oats and 1% milk. I also left out the walnuts this time (had none). Also missed the instruction about soaking over night...oops! Oh well, they still turned out great, thrown together this morning. Definitely a keeper of a recipe! - 7/4/12

I just wanted to make a plug for us Canadians, one thing we do have only in Canada is our national tree, the maple, and we have managed to find a way to tap the best maple syrup. It is something tourists buy in barrel-fulls when they visit Canada. So, you can thank us for that - beats Aunt Jamima! - 5/19/12

I tried this recipe for breakfast this morning, and it was delicious!!!! I didn't think I would like the addition of the pepper, but it was really good. I didn't have any maple syrup but I did add raisins and was very happy! I am looking forward to trying it again tomorrow morning--yummy! - 3/24/12

I buy steel cut oats in bulk at my local health food stoore. Much cheaper than the packaged. I love them with some goat cheese and dried cranberries.
Soaking overnight is the best method I have found. I have also cooked on low in crockpot overnight (but I get up in the middle of the night to check)

I love irish oats! Will have to try this with the rosemary.

I have heard that unless they are fermented, soy products actually aren't healthy for out bodies.

This sounds great. I'll be trying it. I agree with Kim685. I have found that if I eat a "substantial", healthy breakfast, it helps me stay the course through the rest of the day. - 7/2/12

I'm going to sub unsweetened almond milk (35 cals/c.), and it should be perfect! It seems tempting to skim on breakfast and eat less calories, but I've found that making sure I eat enough in the morning is crucial to controlling my portions the rest of the day. 300-400 calories is ideal! - 5/9/12

If you are worried about the high calorie content just eat or make only a half cup serving.

You can find irish oats at basically any store in the oatmeal aisle. Not knowing where you live, here are some national places: Wholefoods, Giants, Safeway, Trader Joes, i've also seen it in TJ Maxx's and Marshall's. I am in the Washington DC metro area.

Found this yesterday and had to try it! What a great way to make oatmeal without the long cooking time! I can throw this together at night and reheat when I get to work! Very versatile! used steel cut oats, almond milk, cranberries & dried blueberries, walnuts, ground flax, frozen mango and berries - 3/24/13

I had my doubts but tried it anyway. Glad I did, it was very good! Even my daughter, who does not like oatmeal, liked it. I used vanilla soy milk with an extra tsp of vanilla, some cinnamon and only had dried rosemary, not fresh. - 3/24/13

Sounds interesting. I never would of thought of savory oatmeal but why not? will try tomorrow. One person commented on not adding sugar, Raw grade b or c maple syrup has enzymes our body recognizes as food & are closest to original substance therefore, it is not sugar. Grade A maple syrup is sugar - 3/23/13

Haven't made this yet, but wonder a couple of things:

Pistachios are lower calorie, and would sub those for walnuts.

Have to be careful w/the sugar, so will sub a bit of Agave.

I too prefer steel cut oats, so would made the recipe with that.

LOVE savory with my oats. Great for supper!

This sounds terrific. Soaking the oats does save time, but I still like them better when cooked the traditional way as they have more texture. - 3/23/12

Most of the fat & calories comes from the walnuts, so you can either eliminate them or use less. You could also substitute almonds which have less fat & calories. - 3/23/12

Actually, why stop at pepper? I added a shake-shake of cayenne. You don't taste it ... at first. Then as almost and after taste you go "Whoops, what was that." It's a little Zing from the cayenne. - 3/23/12
