I multiplied this recipe for a soup luncheon at our church, adding carrots and chicken boullion, then cooked in overnight in a large crockpot with a meaty ham bone that added about half the required ham. Everyone loved the soup which was not too salty. My first ever bean soup! - 1/30/11

I also added my ham bone, carrots and 4 bay leaves...my taste. I upped the ingredients and placed it in the crock pot. The basic recipe here is a great guide and also for anyone who wants to learn a simple great bean and ham soup. - 5/19/09
