My husband's sister made this cake a tradition in her extended family. She would bring it to special occassions when the whole family would get together. It is moist, delicious and worth the effort. Ingredients

3 tblsp cocoa
4 - 1/2 oz. bottles red food coloring
1/2 cup shortening
1.5 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
2.5 cups flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soca
1 tsp. vinegar
WALDORF FROSTING
4 tblsp flour
1 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening (can use butter and shortening separately but must equal 1 cup)
1 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
3 tblsp powedered sugar
Directions
Make a paste with coloring and cocoa.
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and paste. Mix.
Add milk and flour alternately.
Add salt and vanilla.
Mix vinegar and soda. Add to above mixture.
Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
FROSTING
Make paste of flour and milk.
Cook until thick (stir constantly). Let cool (at least 1 hour).
Cream butter and shortening. Beat 4 minutes.
Add 1 cup sugar. Beat 4 minutes.
Add milk paste, vanilla and powdered sugar.
Spread on cake.
