Ingredients

    1 lb penne, dry
    --------------
1 8oz can tomato sauce, no added salt
1 6 oz can tomato paste, no added salt
    1 cup water
    1 Tbsp sugar
    ------------
1 28oz can petite diced tomatoes, no added salt, rinsed and drained
    --------------
    1 Tbsp basil, dried
    2 tsp garlic powder
    1 tsp onion powder
    1/2 tsp black pepper
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp cayenne
    ------------
1 3.25 oz jar capers, drained

Directions

1--Begin heating water to boil pasta. In sauce pan on medium heat, mix together paste, sauce, water, and sugar until blended.
2--Drain, rinse, and drain tomatoes. Add to sauce.
3--In separate bowl, mix together spices. Add pasta to water when boiling. Boil for 5 min, stirring pasta and sauce occasionally, then add spices to sauce.
4--While waiting for pasta to finish (about 5-6 minutes), watch sauce. When tomatoes seem to be slightly disintegrating, remove from heat. Stir in drained capers.
5--Drain pasta when it is al dente -- just past chewy. Do not rinse. Put pasta back in pot and stir in sauce. Cover for 5 min or longer if desired. Stir before serving.
